A good friend who has just turned 70 has spent most of the last ten years in China. She's [that's right] a retired, single adult literacy teacher. She initially came as a volunteer teacher, "as something different to do", and if not for the need for two artificial knees would still be here. She was in Shanghai studying Chinese until recently.
Is this a new category? |

4,6,35 Plus I have taken 12 months leave from a very stressful job trying to drive cultural change in government, private sector and disadvanataged communities. Needed a major break, the dollars were good, but not enough to compensate for the frustration! |

I pick No. 3. But I came here for none of those reasons really. I live from Sunday to Sunday when I spend 4 hours at the local Orphanage - all my salary goes to the children - there are 60 kids there and I take toys, lollies, fruit and clothing every week. I am now getting together the 60 Christmas presents. To me. the teaching is just a means to an end.
Everyone has a different agenda for being in China and mine is the Orphanage.

Old guy, plenty of faults, generally interested in teaching, live for the great moments in teaching when you can see the light go on or progress really made, TEFL Cert, happy to be here, wondering if the labels we put on each other mean a damn to our students or if how we teach them is more important to them. |
