Am going to make the move in August (or possibly September to save up a few more 's before I go).

Just a few quick questions:

Is 25k/30k a month enough to live on in Prague?

I would be looking to flatshare (and have been looking at expatz.ck) do you think something reasonably central like Zizkov could be got for 7k a month inc bills for a room?

As for moving over there, I'm British so is it just a case of rolling up and opening a bank account and away I go or do I need to register/get a tax number etc (and if so how long will this take).

And how much of my salary will I lose to the taxman. If I'm on 25k a month say then how much will I see net? As a Brit I get free healthcare with my E111 (and anyway its a 30 plane ticket home to Newcastle if the worst comes to the worst) so I assume I don't need insurance?

Cheers guys, am really excited. Had my heart set on Budapest or Krakow at first as Ive been to Prague a fair few times, but the ease of access here and home, and size of the job market compared to those other two places has swung it for Prague Smile Can't wait!

25/30k p/m is enough to live on easily, especially if you get rent for 7k. Most teachers probably earn 20-25k here and we eat and drink out often and travel to some great places in the country. The problem is travelling outside Czech Republic...train tickets are expensive on international trains and of course...flights back to England has been a problem for me. The flights can be found cheaply but then...as im sure you know...as soon as you step in the pub at home your czech wages will disapear at an alarmingly fast rate. But to answer the original question...living on that is easily done but don't expect to save Cool

I do know of rooms in zizkov for 7k but it is generally quite an expensive area. I used to live in Zizkov and my flat was 20k (so 10k each). Its also not the nicest area....great bars but a bit dirty and lots of gypsies. Vinohrady is a nice area...its next to Zizkov...but again quite expensive. For cheaper areas try Prague 7..good location near Letna Park, generally cheap and the area is up and coming with plenty of future development planned. To be honest you just need to keep trying expats because if its flatshares im sure you will come across a 7k room in a decent enough area....maybe nto including bills.

Yes...all you need is a bank account.

The tax is weird because i know some teachers get taxed loads and some less. This is because some schools take the rent off the wages and don't tax it. Without this you would be looking at maybe 21-22k net.

The E111 is fine but i havent had to use it yet (touch wood). I think you may get charged for certain things but nothing major.

Prague is definately an easier option than the other two but make sure you put effort into getting a job with a decent school rather than the 300,000 crappy private agencies that are around. The problem with this is you will end up working for about 4 different places to build your hours and will be lucky to get 25k! These agencies just hire people off the street and its all about the money to them with limited resources for the teachers. They start hiring people who want to teach just to get money for their travels...these teachers then ditch the school after a month when they get bored of prague and it has effects on the real teachers.
