Let's see...
Doing ESL, there is, in order:
Mexico
Lebanon
back to Mexico
Indonesia
China
back to Mexico again, soon, I think. But I can't count the same country three times, can I? So I guess just four countries.
Spent a year in New Zealand, but that was playing music, not teaching. In fact, that was long before I became a teacher at all. |

I have a former colleague with a count of 9, and who plans stints in every country in Latin America within a decade or two...

In chronological order:
Czech Republic
USA
China
Japan
Chile
Peru
Oman
But.........
USA--part-time teaching in one of the on-site programs at my grad school while I was getting my MA.
China--only a one-month summer program while I was in grad school--I figured I wouldn't be able to afford China once I had finished and had to start paying off my loans
Chile--only a few months (with proper notice given--no overnight runner or anything!) because, well, it was a horrible job
I've spent (or will spend) one or two years in the other places. Is that not long enough? No contracts were broken, and I had valid reasons for leaving all of them. I admit that I've got more breadth than depth in terms of locations, though.

9 is the most countries anyone on Dave's has visited? Wow, I thought some of you hardcore international TEFLers would be at least up in the teens! Anyone know of someone whose number is high up, but hasn't posted here yet? |

John, I think hard core TEFLers tend to stay in a country for a while. get to know your market, contacts, etc.
I am a newbie compared to some- only 15 years but only 2 countries. |

Yeah, you are probably right about that. I have only two foreign countries under my belt after about 12 years of TEFLing.
However, I did see the C.V. once of a professor of TESOL in Montreal who had taught in a different country for every year since about 1972! I think they were mostly just short summer gigs though. |

Au contraire, mon frere.
The question was about countries we'd taught in...and serious teaching usually means spending at least a year, and frequently 2, 3, or more. So how can I get into the teens- I'm only 33.
If the question is how many countries visited, I'm not even sure. Most of western Europe, a fair bit of eastern Europe, and a good part of the americas...
Best,
Justin |

The question is: how many countries have you taught in? I would like to find out who the Charles Veley of TESOL is. |

Charles Veley's a fraud! There aren't 518 countries. You said yourself that Taiwan and China count as one. You think that occurred to Charles Veley? I think not! |

How can you count Taiwan and China as one? They don't even have the same president. They also don't even have the same currency!!! |

The Taiwan vs China debate depends on your politics, Jzer- Sure, they have different presidents, but which is the legitimate government of the real China?
Best,
