|
|
I have heard Ecuador has some decent potential when trying to find PAID ESL jobs. I have searched up and down and have come across many schools. The problem is most of them need volunteers, which if it came down to it, I would do. Although, a person's got to eat and a little extra spending money would not be bad either. Most of the schools I have found that do pay are generally for adults and businesses. I am hoping to teach children. I am TEFL certified and have a masters in Education. I have been looking for months and am hoping to go in June, so it is coming down to the wire. Does anyone have ideas, websites, contacts, stories....anything?
Thanks

First of all, I would recommend PMing Justin Trullinger.
Second, there's the LA job list which has schools in Ecuador. Also check out www.tefl.com www.tefl.net and www.teachabroad.com
If you're a qualified teacher, look at international schools or IBO schools |

Have you tried CEDEI School in Cuenca?

They refer to the pay as a "stipen" so it's not a lot, but more than a volunteer. That also might make it easier for them to get you a cultural exchange visa, rather than a working visa. I also noticed that they work 7:30 to 1pm, so if you are not exhuasted from the kiddies you could do a private class in the evening to increase your income.
Also, have you thought about Mexico? There are private primary schools that would snap you up in most of the larger cities. |

You know me well, NatureGirl- it was a sure thing I'd chime in here sooner or later.
OP, How long would you be looking to stay? And when might you be arriving? If you work in a straight language institute, you may do some children, but it's likely to be mostly business and adults.
Placement in an elementary school might suit you better, but you'd need to be able to commit for a school year...
Pay isn't usually great- depending on the school, it might be as little as $500 per month, but $600 to $1000 isn't impossible. Could be more if you have teaching experience in your own country.
PM me...
Best,
Justin |

They're looking for people now.
On another note, the uni I worked with before also did the volunteer visa thing, worked out great for me. You're not a resident, at lesat in Peru, but that means that you don't have to go to immigrations or pay taxes. So it's easier for the worker and the employers because they don't have to go through the red tape |

Thanks all for your help.....
I am hoping to be there by June and depending on the job I was planning on staying anywhere from 3-6 months. It depends on a lot of factors, including: city, atmosphere, school, pay and of course happiness.
The search continues....

It's a nice country, and I think you'll enjoy it.
But understand that 3 to 6 months is a fairly short time- most language schools try to get people on a 12 month contract. And elementary schools, which are the leading place to teach kids, want a teacher for the whole academic year.
There's plenty of work; language schools get desperate, and hire people who aren't staying so long. But know that, as you're here for so short a time, you won't be able to pick and choose overmuch.
And wages are low enough that you probably won't break even on the trip in 6 months.
All the best,
Justin |
