hello
I am thinking of moving to either australia or new zealand after i have taught in south korea for a year. I am getting my degree which will enable me to work in th social service field. I have a two year diploma to be a youth worker but i was wondering if anyone can give me information or website about the natives in new zealand or the natives in australia. I know in aussi they are called aboriginals but i forget the names of the nz natives. i want a web site that talks abou the problems the children and youth faces and if there is a need for social worker, youth workers, outreach workers ect. if anyone knows..please helpe me..thanks

Hello,

Firstly, it is considered a huge offence to call an Aboriginal person a 'native'. Please use 'indigenous' or 'Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander'. Where are you from? There is great demand for people with the skills you have detailed, but there is also a thriving educational industry in Australia so that both indigenous and non-indigenous people can become qualified in social work. There is a tendency for organisations (which are largely state-funded) to want to hire people from the culture that they seek to help, due to the belief that to have experienced the problems first hand, makes a person more qualified. Therefore, jobs would probably be hard to come by for a non-Australian. Also, government funding problems mean that there is rarely a steady stream of work.

As far as I know, an indigenous person from New Zealand is referred to as a Maori, but I have never been to New Zealand, so am prepared to be wrong on that one.

my intensions was not to offend anyone by calling them aborinigals..i am from canada but i want to go traveling around the world and help children and youth who are troubled..but do you know of any website..that can help me with my search...thanks

The govt funded social service agency in NZ is called CYF (Child, youth & family) - try www.cyf.govt,nz it might work. They are advertising for staff at present. However as racial discrimination is illegal in NZ you will probably have to work with both pakeha & Maori & be required to have an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi.

by the way..i see that you occupation is esl teacher..did you by any chance go to asia to teach english and how did you find it..and one more thing..let say i wanted to work as special education assistant in the school board which website would i got to..special education teachers or assistants are teachers that work with children have ADD, ADHD, autism and behaviour problems that prevents them from funtioning in a regular class..

Yeah, Maori is correct, I hope I know seeing as I am one (well, half anyway).

The BAD news.

CYF, Children Young People and Families, is the whipping boy of the New Zealand public service, I also used to be a public servant, in terms of press coverage and prestige and just about anything else. Go to nzherald.co.nz and do a search under CYF.

Much of this has to do with a lack of measureable outputs and outcomes that are only measureable in a negative way. If you want more info on this or related stuff email me, I like writing monster posts even less than reading them.

The GOOD news.

They are desperately short of staff and I think I read somewhere they were activly recruiting outside NZ. Give it a shot.

Knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi is essential to get a job in the New Zealand public service. If your interested Claudia Oranges book, creatively titled, `The Treaty of Waitangi` is excellent. For a crash course email me some questions.

Thank you so much for the help. The thing is i need the info for my paper that i am writing also. I am writing about what i want to do when i am done my degree meaning that i want to be a youth worker. I would like to work in either nz or aussi and my teacher told me that i should try to find out some of the problems the children or teens face if i decided to go to one of the countries..meaning the problem that maori children and teen faces. I found one website that talkes about alcohol abuse, they having problems in school ect. But i would love to go to nz and work but it seems that i need to really know stuff about the maori people which i am willing to learn. I will drop you and email and hopefully u can give me some good website that i can use..
By the way are u teaching in japan and how do u find it..i am thinking of teaching english myself in south korea

As far as Maori info goes I suggest putting `Maori, New Zealand` into google.

Japan is fine, currently cold. But fine.

I have been here 2 and a half years and am ready for a break but I have no problems with the place, except that Japanese can't make coffee.

English teaching is a great experience, enjoy Korea.
