Casa Mexicana (the guest house for Escuela Mexicana) has an apartment for rent. Escuela Mexicana also has access to some apartments for rent from private people.
You may also want to stay somewhere cheap, like Casa Bertha, at first and then ask around about apartments for rent. A lot of things get rented just by word of mouth and by posting a sign in a window; although, since GTO is a university town there may be a newspaper with listings as well.
As far as work goes in GTO, I scoped it in May 2006 and this was the word on the street: There are a handful of private language schools that teach English; generally they are not willing to sponsor anyone for a work permit, either because they don't want to do the paper work or legally they can't. It is difficult for the schools to keep students and privates are hard to get and keep. Pay at the language schools is low at around 25 to 35 pesos per hour because there are plenty of backpackers with no certification and no experience that are willing to take whatever they can get in order to stay a few months. The university and the business school hire English teachers for decent pay and will sponsor you for a work permit, but competition for these jobs is stiff and generally requires having some sort of "in" and a masters degree with teaching experience.
Please post back on what you find out when you get there as it is always good to have updated information. Best wishes. |
