Not nearly as oxymoronic as military intelligence or quite American.
RAK is actually a nice place as long as your not the kind of person who needs to sit in a bar every night in order to feel whole. |

| "Quite" American? I'm quite American, but not quite the stereotype that gets bandied about here all the time. Having lived all over Europe for 15 years (1960-75) I found certain others noisier. "Your" not the kind of person who needs to sit in bars all night? No, my not that kind. Nonetheless, holbrook's summary of RAK is reasonable. I don't like the dust and the trucks and the bad--really bad--roads, and the barren mountains are way overrated, since you can't even seen them through the dust, smog and haze during the hot months. Apartments are below standard...but HCT people get better housing allowances than I do, so they're comfortable, and it seems to me that how much a person likes his/her location is strongly related to how comfortable and big the housing is. |

I also think that people who come from/ grew up in smaller towns and are used to the quieter lifestyle find RAK more to their liking that those used to large cities.
the nomad makes a good point about accommodation, and I'm one of the lucky ones specifically having a big villa and a pool in a complex. My young kids can spend 4 hours a day and are pretty content. and for those of us who have lived in a 6 tatami japanese apt, walking into a 3500 sq ft house is quite nice. |

| Indeed. I, too, once suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune--living in a Japanese apartment. |

speaking of life in RAK.
There is now an online webpage with a forum for RAK. They are in the beta testing stage and still working out the bugs, but it has huge lists of things to do with contacts.
www.rak4you.org
(best if viewed in mozilla, there are bugs in IE.) |
