Right i have three places in mind as to where i'd like to go Napoli, Bari or Palmero. Im leaning heavily towards Napoli at the moment. Im just wondering would $4000 be an adequate amount to tide me over untill i get a job?

US$4,000 = about 3,000 euros... Considering that that's three months salary for the average EFL teacher in Italy, it should be enough to tide you over for the six weeks or so until you get your first paycheck - I'm assuming two weeks of jobhunting/waiting to start and a month of work, but it might take longer. You will have extra expenses and setting up costs at first, of course.

Rent: you can stay in a hostel or cheap hotel when you arrive, but to stop those euros disappearing fast, you'll need to find a room in a house- or flatshare. Google 'affitto camera Napoli' or 'affitto stanza Napoli' so that you at least have an idea of what a fair price is before you arrive.

Eating, drinking, etc: have a look at the International City Cost Guide on www.tefl.com/home/col_survey.htm. You'll need to register (very quick) if you're not already a tefl.com member, but it's free. The guide is very useful (info on the cost of accommodation, food and drink, utilities, eating out, etc). Unfortunately there are no specific details on Napoli, Bari or Palermo, but you can view information for Milan and Rome. There won't be much difference in the price of packaged food and consumer goods between Milan/Rome and the far south, but local fruit, vegetables, city transport and (especially) rent will be cheaper the further south you go.
