Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a bookie in Japan?
Last week I had a hankering to make a small financial investment in a pretty little pony that I liked the look of. However, I couldn't find a bookie to take my money. I'm presuming that gambling can't be illegal here as there are pachinko halls everywhere, also there's a pretty big horse racing scene as well. How do punters get a bet on?
Gambling online is a definite No No, for me. It's far too dangerous. It has to be cash on the nail or not at all.
Any clues?
JB

Horses tend to get eaten in Kumamoto, so maybe that's why there are no bookies.

I think there are places similar to bookmakers strictly for keiba optimistically called WINS.

Quote:
For anyone wanting to play the ponies seriously, JRA racing is the only option. The JRA operates two tracks in Hokkaido, one in Kyushu, two in the Kansai area, three in the Tokyo area, and two in northern Honshu. If there is no JRA track near, seek out one of the JRAs many off-track betting facilities, called WINS (another mysterious Japanese acronym). If reading kanji is not a problem, a great way to beat the crowds is to get a JRA on-line account, watch the races on TV and bet using cell phones or on the Net.

Hey Jonny B, FuriousMilk and anyone else who's interested. How about arranging a Dave's ESL Cafe day at the races?
Come on it could be a blast!

Got some regular poker games going in the Kanto area. You can get the details from my web page.

Sounds good, but with me in Osakal, Jonny B in Kumamoto and yourself in the dosshouse on Mile End Road, it'll be a bit tricky to get us altogether.

Yes it sounds good, but trying to organise people into a group in this way is notoriously difficult. Good luck with it Sweeney T. Let us know how you get on.

On another note, a bunch of us are planning a day out at the races at Arao which is near Oita, not far from Fukuoka. Anyone interested and close enough is welcome. You don't need to worry too much about the gambling aspect, it's mostly about having a sociable day out and enjoying the sunshine.

I'll post more details when I have them and if anyone's interested.
