I've noticed that you can't seem to choose what exact location you'd like to be placed for your teaching assignment until after you sign the contract. Your employer puts you where there is a need. This seems like the norm.

I would prefer to be in an urban locale vs. in a rural area. I've already been told by my potential employer that there will be nothing available in Tokyo, my first choice.

I really like everything else about this company.

Is there anything I can do to ensure a placement I can live with (they did ask my preference at the interview), or should I just hope for the best and if I end up out in the country, hop on a train to the city on my days off?

Thanks!

IMO if you state too clearly that you want to be at such and such a place, then they might not think you are flexible enough?

I wouldn't worry about it. Rural areas can be great to. If you get a group of friends in a small town, you will be well off.

As long as there's a Family Mart within walking distance it's all good!

- Tokyo is not the only big city in Japan ! If you request that you would prefer to be in or near to a big city, I think recruiters do take this into account as much as they possibly can - given that most people express a preference to be placed in a big city...
