Clarkie, I have honestly missed you. It might've been a few weeks that I haven't read your lovely posts and signature along there. Let me tell you for the sake of this thread that nobody can be "pretty sure" as you've said till he/she gets his/her passport STAMPED.
Schools/centers usually will not release their ID (a seven digit number as you say) to their applicants. Then, any contact numbers to the office bureau, which is a nice try, might not work. This is China.
OP, you might never be sure enough. However, if you are worried about your legal permit to work, have it well worded in your contract prior to your arrival there.
Someone on here said that the city is sh*te, but if you are interested in it and make your trip all the way there, I believe that your options will be opened in the event of presumable failure in that one place. There are many jobs (plenty of the sh*tty ones)...just don't go with your pocket empty, if you know what I mean. Some do and then cry/beg schools for cash advance. Be a proud foreigner.
Peace to all bureaus as well as polit bureaus in China
and
cheers and beers to all Chinese schools and centers that can get you a legal work permit |

| I'm already in China actually, I'm just having a hard time at the school I'm at AND my house mate......... I was told Tianjin was a great City by some, and others told me it was sh*t... I guess it would be worth the train ride to meet that school if they're able to give a proof that they're legal... But otherwise I'll just find another school, I'll end up finding something at some point.... I'll give updates about this school...... |

Tianjin, from what I've been told by the Irish FT's I'd met in Hohhot, is the bicycle capital of China. |

Boubou you obviously have your head screwed on right and I am sure that what you write above is exactly what will end up happening.
Honestly I can't see why you should spend too much time trying to convince the school to prove that they are legal. It is a legitimate and reasonable request and the fact that they are not forthcoming with a convincing reply is not a good sign.
I wouldn't waste time getting to contract signing with a school who cannot even tell you their name in Chinese or provide you with evidence that they are entitled to employ foreign teachers legally.
A possible way around the direct approach if that doesn't work for you is to contact past or current foreign teachers at that school and check that they were provided with all legal documentation for work in a timely fashion.
Aside from that I would keep looking. As you rightly wrote 'you'll find something at some point' even if this job falls through. |

| Good point, I've e-mailed them again today with more questions, at the begining it was an answer every 30 minutes or so, now, no answer at all today.. well, tough luck.. I'll look more around where I am now.. I was told that there are 2 middle schools in my area looking for teachers, and, they are licensed. |
