I know that some accents and nationalities are more appealing than others. What is it like for South Africans? Are they veiwed the same or in a similiar league to the main Anglo countries?

Are there many South African working in Asia? Any here on Dave's or do you work with any?

There appears to be a few Sth Africans teaching in China. Why don't you post your query to the China Off-topic Forum ?

A growing number of S. Africans are teaching in Korea, though they are among the lowest paid among English teachers. I must say that I'd never want to learn English from them unless they changed their accent and followed U.S. English.

There are loads of South Africans in Taiwan. I think a lot of employers like them because they tend to stay longer than other nationalities (they don't seem to want to go home). In my experience (working at a school with 90% South Africans) they work hard, which if course is another bonus for employers.

I have heard some South Africans have taken lower wages than average, but not the ones at my school, most of whom had been in the country between 6 and 12 years and were doing very nicely for themselves.

Those with thick regional accents can be hard to understand - same goes for teachers coming outta the US, UK, NZ, Oz, etc.

I'm South African, taught in Taiwan (earned about 60,000TWD/month, working 20 hours/week, taught in China and earned 10,000RMB/month, also 20 hours/week.

I definitely didn't accept being paid less than other teachers, and was regularly turning down extra work.

Life's good if you're willing to work for it.[/quote]

I knew a South African family in Cheongju Korea, and they were doing quite well - good salary and a great apartment.

I guess it depends upon how thick your accent is?

Best to you.
