Interesting that you noted that Ghost. I too am a sports freak and love to work out. Whether its riding bicycle, running or lifting weights - which I dont do enough of these days as I am not a member of a gym at this time. And other sports which I partake in.
However my noted point is - Why and how can people ever say that one can do too much sports?
I also find it interesting that people here in Istanbul, my point of reference, say that I do too much sports.
Is there such a thing?

Of course you can do too much sports, Id love to play more football, rugby, cricket tennis, a lot more, seriously, but I'm responsible enough to know that I have a commitment to drinking myself into and unintelligible stupor four times a week. |

The cheapest health insurance is a combination of exercise and sensible eating habits.
Everyone should get at least 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. Most people have few excuses as to not being able to find 60 minutes per day to exercise. It is question of organization.
Even in Istanbul, there are a couple of Parks where you can power walk or jog. You can always find the time if you are organized.
Ghost usually has a gym bag with track suit and running shoes, small towel and deoderant, and if there a couple of spare hours (between classes) during the day - it's time to take off for a power walk or jog for 30-45 minutes. If there is no shower at work, you can take a 'sponge bath' in the washroom with your soap and towel down. Do it like the Africans and you will still be clean.
There are gyms sprouting up all over Istanbul, and you can join for a monthly fee which will not ruin you. Tell them you are a teacher at such and such a school, and you might get a discount (bring the school card).
It is sad to see so many ESL/EFL teachers get into bad habits during spare time of basically drinking/smoking/eating junk food.
Exercise is not always fun, but it should be a daily habit. It is health insurance.

I live halfway up a very long and very steep hill. This is my third address in Istanbul where I've found myself in such a geographical situation. I get 30 minutes of exercise whether I want it or not. Just getting anywhere here involves running up and down hills, dodging taxis, hiking to the metro or bus or to places inconvenient to vehicles. My bmi is perfectly normal (I checked- i have way too much time on my hands). I still like going for a drink and meal. Balance is necessary for sanity here.
I hate gyms. I'd rather go out dancing or go for a long walk up a steep hill. |

| Those BMI's seem far too simplistic ... won't a muscly meathead come out as obese as a limp fatty of the same weight and height ... |

Dodging traffic and walking uphills in this city are indeed workouts!! Everyday whether we want to or not.
But I still miss the gym to get the tone and muscle strength. I worked out all the time in the states and have always done so. Where I live there arent too many gyms but here in my work area I can easily find one. Will check it out. I also go to a sports club where I do martial arts which I have done for years also...
But its costly! My next mission is to buy a good mountain bike. I want so badly to ride the sahil yolu in my area and just cruise for miles.
I love the dancing too but these days ı dont get out that much. |

Most people don't swim in the sea. They just bob up and down. Not really exercise.
when you say the sea is clean in Izmir do you mean outside of Izmir or the bay between Konak and Alsancak. When I was a regular on birinci kordon the sea was no better than sewage. Be nice if has been cleaned up. |

That's good - as long as you get your heart rate up, and work up a little sweat, exercise can be incorporated into your day - and you do not need to go to the gym.
Walking is great, and if you pump your arms like ghost, you burn even more calories and tone the muscles in your upper body. Don't worry about what people think - they won't be around anymore when you are 75 and still healthy (thanks to the exercise regime).
Swimming is best, but it's boring. Ghost goes to the pool 3-4 times a week in Korea, and swims 1500-2000m in the water. Feels great afterwards.
You can get an exercise bike in your home, and pedal away while watching t.v. or reading a book......it is aerobic, and you burn fats by going from 30-45 minutes on the bike. Most efficient is short interval bursts....and then your workout can be shorter. But minimum aerobic exercise benefit is about 20" in duration.
Ghost often does 3 times a day in Korea. 35" jog before work. 30" bike ride (on hilly roads) at lunchtime, followed by 1500-2000 swim after work at 5.30pm.
