Hi, I�m apartment sitting in San Francisco, CA this summer. I�m an experienced ESL teacher and I have a Pentium 4 computer and a broadband connection. I�m ready to switch to online ESL teaching. I�m curious to know more abput it. Please tell me more about it if you have any experience with online ESL teaching.

| Good question. I'm heading back to the 'home' country in July, and I'm wondering if this might be a way to supplement a meager ESL living... or even replace it. |

I also know a Canadian here in Mexico who used to do online teaching. I was interested but when I found out it was only 10 USD an hour, I decided against it, I can make more than that giving privates here in Mexico.
And Mike, not all jobs in Mexico are teaching fresas, I don't. (And I doubt LS does either.) |

| $10 USD is fine with me. I pay no rent in San Francisco and have a great computer in a nice apartment. |

True. My uni students are really terrific; it's nothing like teaching spoiled rich kids in a private school. |

First your fresa students call you both payaso and aburido (boring clown).
Then they tell you you �speak too much English�
Then they get picked up by their parents in brand new BMW SUVs.
Then you get payed 50 pesos per hour.

I think you need to work on your classroom management, Mr boring clown.
Surely somebody has found an effective technique for dealing with privileged Mexicans? Anybody? Anybody? Bueller?

Well, not Mexicans, but I teach upper-class Peruvians. It's hard to have classroom management if the institute doesn't support you. And they basically run the school, cheat on exams and want make up exams, get grades changed, etc. I was told that they only thing I can do is give them verbal warnings, the get three a lesson, so every lesson, I'm supposed to tell them three times not to shout in class?
I found that what worked for me, maybe becuse of my age, they're only a few years younger than me, was treating them with the same attitude.
So if I asked a question and someone shouted out the answer, I ignored her, interrupted her and called on someone who raised their hand.
Other things that might work are bribes with candy, no homework or games. Depends on the situations. |
