I do because at around age 11-12, I was brainwashed by the following things:
1) Martial arts.
2) the book, "Shogun" by James Clavell.
3) the movie, "The Seven Samurai" by Akira Kurosawa.
4) the travel guide "Fodor's guide to Japan" (mid-90s, with pictures) which I begged and pleaded with my mom to buy for me.
5) Playstation 1 when it first came out (I've never been so happy as that time) - and especially the early games such as Battle Arena Toshinden and its very Japanese instrumental soundtrack.
Thus, the seeds were planted at an early age. Of course, then puberty hit and I forgot all about Japan and I began to explore new horizons. It wasn't until late summer of last year until I heard one song by Ayumi Hamasaki that brought everything back. My J-renaissance had begun and now, as an adult, I am ready to experience Japan! |

Not having actually been there yet (sigh... one of these days), I'll say why I'm interested.
I guess there was always the sort of exotic appeal when I was younger, but lately it's more or less the geography, history, and cinema (although mostly older stuff). When I say geography, I mean the urban and human dimension more than the mountains, subtropical climate, and coastal aspects (although those are just as attractive). I feel it's something to be experienced, if only to say I experienced it, and I don't think it will be quite the same as the environment in, say, Chicago, although I'm not sure of course.
History-wise, the fact that it's the only non-Western country to have managed to fend off colonialism and actually compete and win against major Western powers during the last few hundred years (well, probably not the only one for much longer, but still it was over a century ahead of the rest of the world), militarily and economically, and that in itself is interesting enough for me. Not a huge reason to visit, but a reason to be curious, I suppose.
That and a relatively different society that still has all the comforts and, more importantly, pay rates as home
I suppose I'd be lying if I said some anime hadn't continued my interest, but I don't really think Ghost in the Shell is what's bringing me to Japan in any significant way. |

I like Japan because I drove a Honda 15 years ago. |

Keep your reasons coming I say...gives me more to say when the inevitable question at next week's interview comes around: 'Why did you come to Japan'? |

Interesting that it's only people who haven't been to Japan that are responding to this... As for my answers, I'll think about it and get back to you. |

I am reading that book now and it is awful. You'd think if you were going to write a 1000 page tome on Japan you'd at least bother to do some freakin research! ALL of the Japanese language used in the book is WRONG and it is SO ANNOYING. ARRRGHHH!

I hated that book too- I had been in Japan about 5 years already when I read it. I have read others which give a more accurate historical account of Anjin-san's life- "The Needle Watcher" was one of them. |

Yup. I found that out too after I came to Japan. I still think it's a pretty decent read but indeed the Japanese excerpts tend to be incorrect or at least somewhat flawed. |

Wasn't James Clavell's Shogun supposed to be a comedy? Now I understand... |

Shogun was terrible. Riddled with errors as well as being a prime example of Clavell's constant inability to ever finish a book properly.
Every one of his books has a weak and unsatisfactory ending. |

I think the mainstream popularity of Clavell just goes to show how much people misunderstand about Japan, and how willing they are to believe whatever myths people tell them about it. |

Thia is where all the men on this forum never say "the girls" because they want to look clever and above that kind of thing but come on. It's such an obvious reason why so many men stay here. Even if you are not a playboy at all, have a steady firlfriend etc, it's what keeps a lot of men here. |
