Shmooj,
Grace was talking about Western Union, not Lloyd's.

I don't think she could have been because she said:

I think that I'll stick with the post office, since I doubt that Lloyds exists on Shikoku

Good ones! Laughing

Last time I lived there, I used--always-- the Post Office. Once I was "ahead" of the game, bills etc, I just stayed that way, the whole time I was there.

What was lost in the official gov't. exchange rate, I think was made up (or stayed even) in the (relatively) low cost factor. I think they do "lowball" you on the exchange rate, not a rip-off exactly, they use the lowest exchange rate listed, for the day before (or last day of business) you purchase money orders.

One other problem, if I recall corectly:
you could only send a maximum amount of per money order: 100,000 Y (?) seems it worked out to 6-700 $ (US) per money order, or something like that. Thus, it was necessary to purchase 2-3 each time I sent money back to the USA.

This was five years ago, so maybe the Lloyds option wasn't as common then. Sounds great, if you don't mind the cost. (See Dunlop's rules, above Cool )

Has anyone tried paypal? https://www.paypal.com/

I have only used it to pay for things over the internet, but it looks like they will also allow you to exchange funds from a bank account in Japan. I don't know if they will do bank to bank transfers, but if you have someone you trust at home who can deposit your money for you it might work and it would be free.

Won't work. Unless they've changed their setup in the last few months - there are severe restrictions on what you can do from within Japan with paypal.

AFAIK, currently there are no Japanese banks that will credit money to a paypal account for transfer out of the country. Look at the paypal help files under "non-US banks". It seems they accept US and Canadian banks only.

It seems paypal will transfer across credit cards though (pay from one credit card to another (ie. from a Japanese card in yen to a non-Japanese card in non-yen)). AFAIK this will end up being counted as a cash advance from one card to another, with all the associated charges and terrible credit card company exchange rates. You then just pay the Japanese card off here as normal. This would be a pretty desperate way of moving money IMO, and you may as well cut the paypal middleman out (web-based banking is your friend) and save on their charges too.

GRIC or a conventional telegraphic transfer would be almost as quick, and certainly easier and cheaper.

It seems to have changed. Japanese banks are accepted. Still I haven't used it for this purpose, so can't vouch for it.

How do you open a Lloyds account?

It says I need a Japanese Driver's License, which I don't have.
I do have an Intl Drivers Permit and my Ontario Driver's License.
Do i have to send copies of this to the Tokyo location and they will get back to me, or can I bring in the form from to my UFJ branch?

Wait until you get your gaijin card after your first few weeks in Japan and then you can open a Llyods account.

The sheet they send you you can take to any major bank and it will instruct the staff how to make a "furikomi" card for to you transfer the money to their agnet banks and them onto to your bank back home.

You can get the banks staff to help you even after that by simply flashing the card.

I recoomend having your account back home linked up online so you can moniter things from here. Do it now before you get on a plane.

Once you get here an extra Shinsei account ceretainly has it's advantages.

I say extra as Japanese employers can and often do designate which bank you can use for getting your pay.
