7 x 90 minute classes per week plus one L O N G meeting per week. I could do without the meeting as little seems to get accomplished; it often feels like a duty performed out of habit rather than out of productivity.
I think my frustration can be attibuted at least partly to cultural attitudes towards meetings. The Western foreign staff present often feel the need to jump in during the long bouts of silence. I'm still not sure whether this is appreciated (as it should be since those who speak up generally get more duties piled on!) or if it's frowned upon. Maybe the silence is supposed to be a part of the meeting...
In any case, I include that meeting as part of my working hours even though I'm not standing in front of a class full of students. I'd rather be teaching.
Cheers,

Maybe that's because Western people don't like silences. It makes us uncomfortable. We find it hard to just shut the f**k up for a minute. |

I work at a private jhs/shs.
My current schedule is 14 x 50 minute classes per week, 8 for first year jhs and 6 for second year jhs.
I also supervise 2 study periods per week, which means just hanging out in the classroom and making sure the kids are studying (something) and not reading books or otherwise goofing off. At that time, I can do lesson prep, check my email, whatever.
It's a pretty good schedule all around. |
My dear fellow, you don't know how lucky you are. Would you mind telling me/us how you can across such a sweet job? |

It's a pretty standard schedule at a private school, I think. The pay is decent- not amazing, but very decent. I am at school from 800 to 500pm, two days off per week. I also help to supervise a sports team, but that is just three afternoons a week (until 530pm).
Where did I find the job? I joined JALT and was on the Junior/Senior High School mailing list. The information cam through that list. I lived fairly close to the school and have my own car/visa/apartment, so the timing was good. Plus, the school didnt need to sponsor me for anything. I could hit the ground running and be productive from day one. |
