| I am hoping to work in Vietnam early next year. I expect to be taking an online MA then. What are the internet connections like? Are they easy to get at apartments? Are there many cybercafes? What are the costs involved in both of these? Finally, what is the operating speed like, same as anywhere else? |

All I can help you with is the internet question. When I was there on holiday 2 years ago there were plenty of cheap PC rooms. Only problem was they often ran several PCs off one modem. Peak times of the day meant painfully slow speed. As far as I can tell the majority of internet there is through modem connections (unlike us luck buggers in SK with unlimited broadband). I always try to remember that when I curse my computer for taking 5 instead of 2 seconds to load pages.

| There are plenty of cybercafes all over the country, even in the smaller towns and they are extremely cheap - 2 dongs a minute when I was there a couple of years ago. However, I have never been in any country where the connection is so unbelievably slow. There are a huge amount of firewalls in place which slows everything right down - it could take up to 5 minutes to open an email. This was in cafes so I don't know about private internet connections, but I believe the connection there too is slow. Good luck. |

| There are still some cheap 4,000d/hr places, but there are also DSL places for about 20,000d/hour and Net to Phone is available making calls home really cheap. HCMC has hundreds of internet cafe's that are much quicker than when I was first here two years ago and I'm aware of 3 really fast places. I'm on Dong Du right now and this place is lightening quick. |

I'm finally only now getting over here from the Korea threads, Dez. Probably more activity over there regarding Vietnam then there is over here in the Vietnam section here.
There are cybercafes absolutely everywhere.. in numbers.. possibly similar to Korea.. possibly. They definetely are numerous. However, as other posters mentioned, they are incredibly slow!!! Takes forever to change pages and check email. Its mind-numbing. If you are willing to spend extra money its possible to get a faster connection in certain places. Occassionally I'd hit certain ones and pay two or three times more money just so I could check my email two or three times more faster and efficiently. Even those are hard to find though. Overall, slow and mind-numbingly slow internet access is definetely all over the place.
Hope you head on down there.. they seem to be getting more and more wired all of the time.. and the last two times I was down there.. 2000 and again 2002 it seemed to keep changing with more and more internet.. so its possibly its even moreso again. As an aside, if you check out Yahoo Chat rooms.. the Vietnam chat rooms are exploding.. must be 1000 Vietnamese chatting through Yahoo Vietnam Chat during the daytime. Just an aside.. Yahoo Messenger seemed to be the only thing that seemed to be on real time. It was what kept my sanity while trying to very slowly check my email.
However oddly another two years has passed by since the last time I was there.. so perhaps things are quicker now.. as the previous poster mentioned. Lets hope so.. I wouldn't mind making my way there again.. and next time to stay awhile. |

| Most cafes now have 56k modems (a big improvement over 2 years ago), but still very slow as it is one or two modems for for the whole cafe. As for taking a course online from there would NOT advise it, you will go nutty with time outs, errors, lack of privacy, and in the end cost. Not sure how easy it is for a foriegner to get internet, but it will still be slow. |

| Get DSL at home for 30$/month plus 65$ installation fee. Have a Vietnamese-speaker call FPT. Very easy... works great for me! |
