Hello.

I would like to get a job teaching at a university for September. The problem for me is logistics. I currently have a job at a university on the mainland Mon - Fri and can't get away to go to Taiwan to interview. I think I have good credentials -- PhD in Eng. lit., CELTA, tons of teaching experience including lots of ESL.

I've heard that most schools want you to be on-site to give you a job. I've also heard that some schools in the south of the island are eager for qualified teachers and will hire you from abroad.

Problem is I've also heard that a lot of uni's, especially in the south of the island, can be.. not such fair or honest employers.

There are tons of uni's listed on www.buxiban.com Problem is hardly any of them have school reviews by past/present teachers. Just wondering if anyone happens to know of any uni's that might be interested in hiring from abroad that are decent schools to work for. Thanks for reading .... Mep

Dear mep3,

Universities are already arranging classes and teachers for the 2007-08 school year.

To get a full-time job at a university, you would need some connections. That means you would need to come here and get to know some people first.

I would imagine that you need to focus on some of the private universities to begin with. The pay would be the same at all universities, due to government regulations. About 80K/NTD per month.

Best wishes,

Taylor

I recommend that you check out the weblog of Scott Sommers. He works at a uni here in Taiwan and keeps his ear to the ground regarding university positions around the island.

This would be the same Scott Sommers who taught at Pusan National University around 1992-3?
