Do you think I could get away with a single ticket and at immigration say I am planning to leave on a ferry from Koa to Okinawa after I've travelled the island..... I have a UK passport.... Would they buy that?

Thanks

But if you're getting the money back within a month or two anyways, is it really that much money?

And you have to show outward ticket off the island dnt u? Are you saying you did not do this?

Thats correct, I had a ONE WAY ticket to paradise...i arrived with an itinerary in case they asked and figured I could just buy a flight to hong kong last minute if they wouldn't let me into the island...all i had to show the people in the TECO office was the itinerary

What you did was risky.....

I'll speak with my agent tomorrow.... I might just come in on a 1 way ticket an say that I'll be getting the boat to HK or just buy a flight from London to HK and then HK to TPE rtn.....

If you book with China Airlines, you can ask for a "refundable ticket" you can make any or all the portions of your flight "refundable"....book a flight to Taiwan, and an "ongoing" ticket to Hong Kong, but make it "refundable" then, once you're past immigration, the next day you can go to the airport and go to the china airlines desk and refund your ticket, just make sure you have a credit card, and its typically not an issue...it will take a few weeks or so to get your refund....

Its risky, but whats the worst that can happen, if the itinerary gets your 60 day visa at the TECO, then you're pretty much home free...i figured odds are you wont get asked at the immigration for your proof of ongoing travel... if they dont want to let you in you can buy a "refundable" ticket at the China Airlines desk, then use that to enter the country, and most of the time it seems that they dont really want to talk to foreigners too much if they dont have to...of the 4 times i've been through immigration the most any of them have said to me was "hello, how are you?" and "passport please"...

although, yeah the safer route is typically better, and foolproof, both can work effectively

It's the airline, not immigration that will stop you. When you step up to the agent at the airport he/she will ask to see your onward ticket. You will not be allowed to board without one.

People have gotten around this with a unpaid for reservation from a travel agent. Perhaps someone else can explain what they did.

I think it's easier to just have the ticket. Even if you don't use it on the date it's been bought for you can change the date (for a small fee) to a time you would like to travel.

If you'd like to look at a Hong Kong flight try Dragon Air:

Good luck,
Cat

Well, Malaysia Air gave me the most trouble. I had a printout of an E-Ticket and they were upset that it wasn't a "real" ticket. They finally let me on the plane after I signed a form that said I'd pay my own way out of the country if I was turned back at immigration.

Korean Air is the other big carrier I've flown in on. The rest have been discount airlines. Usually my return flight, on the little guys, is with the same company I left on so the information is in the computer. Then it's real easy and they don't even ask.

Hey, vallillo, I'm starting with Hess at the same time! Any clue where in Taiwan you're going to be teaching yet?

As far as traveling arrangements go, my folks are paying for my flight out as a college graduation present, and I'm going to buy myself the cheapest ticket to Hong Kong I can find that leaves within the 60 mark. I figure I'm going to want to visit Hong Kong at some point anyway, and after I get my resident/worker's visa or whatever it is, I can either use the ticket or trade it for a later date. If I trade it, I'll probably take a bit of a money loss, but better that than the hassleof explaining to airports that I'm going to live in Taiwan despite what my visa says!

Anyway...email me or something. We're going to at least be training together, and I'd love to know someone (even a little) before I arrive!
