Hey guys
I am about to leave Japan (in one week in fact). My ex-employer is claiming that on my last pay cheque that they forgot to deduct the social insurance and pension from my pay cheque. Therefore, they are requesting that I pay back the money that they forgot to take out.
The problem is, I have already sent most of my money back home and used most of it to help pay for my grandmother's funeral. I do not have enough money to pay it back.
What do you guys think I should do? I don't really have relatives or friends in Japan that can lend me money. Also, I don't want to borrow money because it will be hard to pay it back as I will be going back home for good in one week.
Any advice you guys have on this would be great. Thank you very much. |

| I would pay it back when you can. So if that means sending your employee the yen equivalent in a personal check say, two months down the line when you get new income flowing in, then that's what I would do. They made a mistake. They will have to cover the loss for now. And they will have to find a way to cash the check. When mistakes are made, people have to deal with it. By the way, how much money are you talking about? |

| Why would you have to pay for their mistakes? If they forgot to take it out then I think they should cover it....(sorry for the aggression, I am a little tired of employers taking advantage of their workers...) |

MOD EDIT
Assuming that it was an honest mistake, and you don't have the money now, make good on it when you can. Explain the situation to them. In the end, it's the right thing to do. |

| It just seems weird to me that they forget....maybe it is different here but in America if the employer forgets something then they take up the slack. Kind of like if you order a cheese hamburger and they give you a chicken burger then you get the cheese hamburger for free.... But that is just my experience... |

It's kind of like the supermarket cashier gives you $20 too much in change, and you go next door to the video store, rent a couple of movies and on the way out, the cashier runs out and tells you that she made a mistake. So you go and say, "Tough sh*t?" Doesn't make sense.
I wish the MOD wouldn't have edited the post, because it was very accurate, without name calling or anything like that. However, I stand by what I said, and I question your integrity.
Punish everyone in the world for an honest mistake? Good rule to live by?
The original poster should just make good when he can. It's not like he loses out. |

I guess you are right but lately I and my fellow workers have been feeling jipped (is that a word) by our employer. Like telling one person that they had accidentally paid them to much and that they wanted to money back (the two people were putting their planning time on their time sheet (something they thought they could do) and it added up to more hours than our boss wanted to pay)...I doubt she got it but still, I dont like being treated badly by someone who is supposed to be my superior.
But if I had a good boss who treated me right all along then I would easily pay the money back, but I guess it has just been a bad week and I think every one is out to get me (or the OP). |
