If you go to Iran, don't be gay.

Excellent point.

If you go to Afghanistan, don't be a woman...or a solder. Definitely not both.

If you go to a nudist beach, don't be a prude...or fat (the fat bit is just for my sake really because I'm a fattest).

I did a bit of research about this, it's my hobby. Kevin Barlow was born in the UK but also had Australian nationality.

Another Briton, Derrick Gregory, was hung there in July 1989 for a drugs offence. I remember this being on the UK news, but I can't find anything about this on the net.

And yet another Brit, David Chell, was sentenced to death in 2000 after being caught with heroin at Penang Airport (as were Barlow and Chambers), but he was cleared in 2001. Something very dodgy went on there.

So, the best advice for any drug smugglers reading is try another airport, Penang looks a bit tricky.

And whoever took this appalling photo of Pudu Prison (where Barlow and Chambers got off) should be caned.

Is that the prison near Times Square? I think I've seen it a couple of times while riding the train. Do you know if they do the visit a foreigner thing? For some sick reason I'm fascinated by foreigners who are serving time in these hell holes. I've read a few books on the subject. Sometimes I feel like I'm in hell because my a/c isn't pumping at full blast. I think I might welcome a trip to the gallows after a few years in that prison.

One of my students once told me how a cop was trying to extract a bribe from him. The student said he only had five ringgits. The cop said that was ok. The student complained that he couldn't pay the toll if he gave the cop his last five ringgits. The cop agreed to make change for him.

That's the one. The pic was taken from Hang Tuah station, no puns please. That windy monorail to nowhere much goes right over it. Check out the now-fading mural on the outside walls, which some convict spent literally years painting.

Pudu's been closed since 1997. It was open to the public for a few years afterwards, but now it's virtually abandoned apart from a police station inside.

I'd imagine you can visit foreigners in any prison if you got details from an embassy first, but I really question people's motives for doing so. Youtube has a BBC documentary about Bangkwang Prison near Bangkok, which includes talking to some of the many people visiting total strangers in there. They were all saddos wanting a different experience, something to tell their mates, write a freelance article about, etc. Bangkwang is now well and truly on the tourist trail. Id rather go to the zoo.

Policemen only get RM700 a month. Even Id struggle a bit on that. I once drove down a bus only street in central KL the sign was in Malay lah! A cop stopped me and wanted cash. I asked for a receipt. He said I could have a receipt if I came back to the police station. I paid. On the other hand, theres also a lot of roadblocks in KL to check for drinking or whatever. They always stop mat sallehs, but I was never asked for cash.

Seriously, what else is there to do in Bangkok? Well, perhaps stuff that might make you end up in prison yourself.

I can't really argue with that. I try to escape KL whenever I have time and money.

I haven't been to Malaysia for a good few years, but the first time I went (96-97) I saw some freaky signs in villages depicting spliffs and death synonomously. Not meaning that the spliffs would kill you of course, just that the government or whoever would off you if you happened to partake.
Now, whether they meant it or not, it's scarey stuff.
I do remember hearing a news report back in 1984 about a guy who was stopped at an airport (in KL prob), searched and found to have something like .01 of a gram of hash or weed that he'd bought months or even years ago in some other country (these were tiny tiny crumbs in the bottom of one of his pockets). Anyway, the guy was sentenced to several years in prison for trafficking(!). It's so long ago that I only remember sketchy details - tiny amount, long sentence...Nice

Malaysia has come a long way since 1984. I don't do drugs so I really don't think about it. Just don't be suckered into carrying anyone's bag at the airport.

Good advice for anyone! Amazingly, despite the movies, the news headlines, the scarey memoirs, people still get caught doing it. Or so they say.
Yeah, I'm sure Malaysia has changed since those days.

It is the money! The money is bad! That is the only reason, as the country is ace!

I concur. IH is advertising for full time instructors. Pay advertised is 3500 Ringgit. Accommodation shared.
Back in 2000, that was exactly what I was earning in KL and the accommodation included was single (not shared) ! Fantastic country ! But .... seven years and no marked increase in pay ?? Something wrong there, i think.
best

The only way to get more money in Malaysia is to stay at the same school for a few years. All pay is based on the number years of experience, that is the number of years with that school. People fresh off a CELTA will get the same as someone with ten years in to start with. It's just way things are dome here.
