I was just re-reading this post, and this part of the OP stuck in my mind.
What is your reason for choosing to be an ALT over a conversation school teacher? Your duties will still be to teach conversational English, you know. Just curious. |

| Just want experience teaching in a school where it is a real classroom setting with 30 students +. Yes, I realize I will be like a human tape recorder and the start up costs are rediculous. I worked at one of the Eikaiwa's already and frankly the experience was good. But, I don't think I am learning anything more after one year. In fact, that is why I decided not to renew my contract. Thanks for the INFO though. |

I've been looking at Interac and ALT over Eikaiwa because I believe public school is less pressure. Sure public school students may be apathetic but I'm thinking they are far less likely to complain then people paying several hundred dollars for lessons. I liked to do something where I'm not working directly for a bottom line.
If any current or former ALTs feel otherwise I'd love to hear your opinions. |

My reasons for choosing ALT over conversastion schools is that I want classroom experience. I have full intentions of getting my BEd when I return home after Japan and eventually become a highschool teacher. So going to Japan is mostly about gaining some experience working with larger groups of children in a classroom setting before I commit myself to another two years of university and teaching as a career. Sitting in a small room at one of the big4 schools, teaching private lessons to a group of 3-6 kids, business men or whoever, isn't the experience I'm looking for. I realise that essentially I'll be teaching the same thing, but it's the classroom setting that I'm looking for. |
