Hi
I'm thinking of coming to Italy to teach; I have an MSA and 15 years of University teaching experienc in the U.S., I also have an Italian passport. If I'm able to get to a good job with some certification, such as TESOL, I will get the certification.
I'd like to know what my job options are---especially with regard to Universities. I'm also willing to work at private schools, but I would want to earn at least E2000 a month (this could be met with private teaching as well).
Please give me some feedback and any other info you think I should know.
Thanks |

Like to earn 2000 a month? Is that before or after tax?.. Wouldn't we all! I'm not sure how you might achieve that, even with a tenured post in a university, and getting that could take years of waiting, contacts, doing poorly paid temporary posts, sleeping with the faculty head,, did I say contacts, etc etc.
I suggest you do some more reading on here. Having expectations is one thing, but a degree of realism is another.
The same applies to private schools and private work where you could achieve the required amount in a month and hardly earn anything the next. I earned 1800 in a week and a half once, but that was gross before tax. Have a look at the job adverts for the private schools to see how bad it can be at the bottom. |

That's why I never get those uni jobs. Now I understand.
Actually, mineposa2, I don't know anything about university teaching in Italy. Hopefully someone with experience in this area can chip in here.
Earning over 2,000 euros net a month is doable if:
1. You are a qualified and experienced state school teacher in your home country looking for work in an international school in Italy. Even then, you won't earn much over 2,000, and you'll find it hard to make ends meet if you have a young family and a non-working partner.
2. You are willing to accept the sometimes thankless job of DoS in a private language school. After a couple of years, you'll probably earn well over 2,000 a month - before tax (hollow laugh). Requirements: usually a DELTA, a few years of EFL teaching experience and the personal contacts gained from spending some time in Italy. Did someone mention sleeping with the boss?
Sue makes a good point about the irregularity of income in self-employment. If we're looking at average monthly income, I'd guess that EFL teachers in Italy usually hit an 'earnings ceiling' somewhat below E2,000. Pay per hour just doesn't go any higher once you reach a certain point, and there are only so many hours in a day that you can teach.
Bottom line: the money really matters to you? Well, there's no reason why it shouldn't. But you need to consider either going elsewhere to teach (the Middle East or Asia), or doing something better-paid in Italy. |

I'd like 2,000 euro a month, please!! I can't help either with University postitions. Connections are EVERYTHING in Italy. With contacts, one can make a good living..but making contacts takes time and, as someone who speaks from experience, one also needs to sort the wheat from the chaff in terms of students. But, hey, if you get a job with a great salary ...TELL US!! |
