After 6 yrs in China teaching for an overseas company(well paid) I want to give freelance teaching a try. I am tired of working in samller cities and now want to work in the major cities. I know little about this type of work so I am hoping that I can get some information here.

Would it be possible to earn between 180-200 an hour?

Would it be posssible to get 25 hrs a week?

How would I go about getting this work?

What is the best city for p/t work?

Does anyone know the name of any agencies in any of the big cities that have p/t postions available.

I already know that there is a lot of travel involved and that you have to find your own accommodation. I am cool with this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It can be pretty unreliable over the long haul;I've done it for about 11 years, and I think it would have been better (more profitable) to have chosen one well paying job.

It would thus be your intention to ignore the criminal/labor laws of the country?

good points william and lostinasia

i've done it "part-time", and've liked it more than anythin' i've done in china Smile
however, you've got to be lucky to get some reasonable students with the money as well as determination to learn..also depends where in china you are and how much you know about this country/city you are in ...making those right connections matters Wink

i've had a thread like this on before and've discussed the quality of services those kinds of teachers provide as well as what they charge for it .. it might interest you OP that there are some that'll work for peanuts and provide "peanut service", but then there are some that are the pride of a laowai in China Smile

peace to all kinds of qualities that we offer
and
cheers and beers to our sources of incomes in china Very Happy

If you only freelance, how will you get the FEC and TRP that would allow you to legally remain in and work in China? Most who freelance have one steady part-time job that they commit to and then, over time, develop the connections necessary to get good, private work.

yes that's a good point, but some don't get their proper permits..it's relatively easy (for the ones in that've been in China and made friends) to find a business person that'll type up an invitation letter...result is an F visa

i like the word free lancing ... well, as long as the freelancers ask for a reasonable fee instead of that desperation when work doesn't come Wink

then, i hope that freelancers make all of foreigner proud enough for their jobs well done, since those that buy their "services" might think of buying it again from others

peace to freelancers and their marketing strategies
and
cheers and beers to all kinds of teachers that help the chinese with English as well as with all other knowledge that comes with it Very Happy

I'm a mercenary...I mean, freelancer.

Actually, I also think it's not worth it. You have your freedom and whatnot, but I would kill for some just-one-step-up-from-total-crap school I could work 16 hours for that provided me a place to live. As housing prices skyrocket, and even rent begins to do the same, it's becoming more and more apparent that perhaps the benefits of a "full-time" position are worth it.

I just hate being under the thumb of some gangster headmaster that thinks he's something because he can steal money from the kids of rich people and flaunt it by driving a Benz.

It's also becoming harder and harder to find "good jobs" as MILLIONS of new training centers are opening and looking for the type of teacher that is easy to deal with; that is, they can offer no frills and don't have to care.

I agree with will wallace. Find a GOOD job and stay with that for a while. I have yet to find ONE SINGLE SCHOOL freelancing that I have thought worth more than a ratz azz.
