They'll probably be replaced in no time. |

You'll still pay the 70K, but nonsmoker is right about your solitude not lasting long. |

The Aeon rents are capped at 55,000 yen at the moment, I believe.
Do you really want to live with the people you work with, as you may at Nova? It's not always the best idea. *shudders* |

Thank you all for your input. After long deliberation and careful thought I decided to go with the 12 month Yamaguchi package offered by AEON Corp.
Thanks again for all of your opinions,

Re: Remaining alone in a multi-person Nova apartment:
It doesn't happen.
i) few teachers stay long enough to be able to afford the equivalent of 4-5 month's rent needed to pay the 1 month deposit + at least that in agency fee + the same again in non-refundable 'key money' + 1 month rent in advance etc. And even if you they the odd 250-300,000 yen handy, is it worth having to kiss goodbye to most of it for ever?
ii) If one teacher moves out, Nova simply move another in (but theoretically the answer is "Yes". Nova re-let the apartment by the room, and each teacher is responsible for paying his/her rent. Nova pay for the apartment and pocket the (often huge) difference, which is one way that they subsidise their hugely loss-making eikaiwa business.
Aeon apartment: subsidised to 46,000 (not 42,000) yen for a single apartment with own bathroom and cooking facilities. Teachers tend to stay about 18 months. Aeon not perfect by any means.
Nova apartment: 60,000 - 70,000 for a room in a shared flat, Nova raking in the difference between the rent you all pay to live in communal squalor and what the apartment is really worth. Most teachers leave the company after 6 months. On top of which Nova have just posted a multi-billionyen operating loss for the last financial year. Will Nova still be there when you arrive?
EDIT: This post was a reply to Japolak's question at the bottom/top of page 1: "Say you live with 2 other roommates in your NOVA apartment...and then say both of your roommates move, would you be still paying around 70K a month still for a 3 bedroom apt?"
Somehow I'd missed that there was a page 2. Anyway, I'm glad the OP decided to give Nova a miss and hope s/he is happy in Yamaguchi. |

Which is why you got the analogy wrong. It should have read:

| I think it's pretty lame to go to Japan and then hang out with a bunch of other English speaking foreigners (Nova roommate system). That'd be like going to Outback Steakhouse. |

Well, I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said better than Captain Murphey, so...

I have gone through the interview process for both NOVA and AEON and feel blessed to have been offered by both. They each offer very similar benefits packages. As a first time international English teacher I am looking for some candid advice.
NOVA can...
get me to Japan in September when I want to leave
an apartment with roommates (sounds good)
allegedly permits teachers to transfer between cities
more likely to send me to a more urban area but will not disclose my assignment until 2 weeks prior to departure
AEON ...
get me to Japan in mid October 40 days after I want to leave
offers a 1 bedroom efficiency apartment (sounds kinda depressing)
does not permit transfer and has assigned me to a more rural placement (Yamaguchi) than I would like
has a much stronger reputation.
I would greatly appreciate any information you can provide on any of these topics (and Yamaguchi in general).
Thank you in advance for your candor,
Bernie |
