What is the best (most interesting, beautiful, relatively safe) area to find a hotel that is not expensive? Anyone have a favorite restaurant or place to hang out? The weatherman says its been cool there recently. Does the elevation keep it that way? Like in June? Thanks for your comments.

It's been warm during the day and a bit cool with the rain...pretty typical rainy season summer, which given the torrents of rain lately, I'll call as officially started.

There are quite a few inexpensive hotels al centro...one such that I know is Hotel Canada...300 pesos per night I think? Call them at 5518-2106. There's also Hotel Oxford near the Revolution Monument at 180 or 200 for a double room (skip the single). 5566-0500.

Keep in mind that summer is the rainy season, which has prematurely begun three weeks ago. Many mexicans living in DF are wearing spring jackets to work early in the morning, but for me it is ideal, only a little nippy at 6 a.m.

You might also consider the Mexico City Hostel, (where I am currently located) 1/2 block from the zocala. The address is Avenida de Brazil no. 8. The dormitory beds are 100 pesos a nite and come with an egg breakfast, free coffee or tea and an hour free internet time.

The Zocalo is an exciting place to be in DF as there are so many street performances and happenings in the area, but then that could be said about any number of places here in the capital.

My favourite hotels in DF are Hotel Cuba and Hotel Havana, both on the same street in the wedding dress district a couple of blocks behind the Zocalo and both between 200 and 250 pesos a night. Of course I've forgotten the name of the street again, Guy do you remember? Is it Cuba? Its got lots of print shops in it too.

Both hotels have airconditioning for those sweaty days.

Cheers,
Lozwich.

Thanks for that inside information, Lozwich. I've been backpacking around the western world since 1970 and now prefer the amenities.

Hee hee, I know what you mean! Very Happy I'm not quite as seasoned as you, but have about 20 years backpacking experience myself. I have such a long list of pet peeves about staying in hostels, usually these days if I know someone in the place I'm going, or at least have a lot to do, its hotel all the way.

I found the address of Hotel Habana lurking in the depths of my old emails.. Quoting our Canadian friend, the address is Republica de Cuba 77 and their telephone number is 5518-1590...add and extra 52 55 at the beginning to call internationally. Hotel Cuba is just down the road, and they have a website! http://www.hotelcuba.com.mx/welcome.htm

Good luck,
Lozwich.
