just how racist are the japanese? a mate reckons that some of them won't buy stuff in supermarkets if it's from china and that the mayor of tokyo referred to the chinese as "chinks" in a newspaper. is this true?

the prime-minister voted in favour of patriotism being taught in schools; the defence force wants more of a mandate to get involved in peace-keeping operations around the world.

does this bode ill or well?

The Japanese are as racist as everyone else. That shouldn't matter anyway if you are able to cope with negativity. Carpe Diem.

Considering the fact that they have no regulations on most of their commercial items and that some of their products have killed, I won't, either.

"Chinks"? Since when did Ishihara ever speak English to use that word? Yes, he DID use a pejorative, but not that one.

Look up www.debito.org for all the accounts of racism and/or discrimination you can bear. Yes, there is racism and discrimination here. There are also a lot of nice people. I'm married to one.

Silly thread.

The Japanese won't buy mad-cow infected American beef, either, damn them! Who do they think they are, acting like they're better than deadly food products.

Because no other politician in any other country has ever made a racist remark before? And, yes, the beliefs of one mayor of one city in a country represent the beliefs of the entire nation of people, right?

Quote:

the prime-minister voted in favour of patriotism being taught in schools;

While the leaders of every other country vote in favor of teaching children to despise their country...
Don't trust everything you read in the news (or from your misinformed friend). Shinzo Abe wants Japanese children to like Japan, and he wants a love for the country to be taught in schools. What is wrong with that? He doesn't want them to teach cultural superiority over the rest of the world. At the moment, Japanese youth generally have no interest in what's going on with their country at any level. That's a lot more tragic.

I don't see how this could be racist at all...

Compared to the US, UK, Aus, Canada and New Zealand? Individually. I'd say the difference is negligeable. The problem is that if you are discriminated against here because you are not Japanese, there is almost no legislation for you to do anything about it.

But you are correct in that the lack of condemnation of the views of Ishihara is a disgrace.

Japan is not the only country that teaches patriotism in schools- do American children still pledge allegiance to the flag at school every morning? To a New Zealander, many Americans with all their flag-waving and hand-on-heart anthem singing come across as quite nationalist.

Is Japan not allowed to do the same thing?

it's not a silly thread, it's an extremely relevant discussion.

i have not made any judgements or said that "i think the japanese are racists." you guys have made this presumption.

i want to discuss this topic, that's all.

as for the story of the mayor of tokyo: this is something i heard and i just wondered if anybody knew this story. i'm sure he didn't say "chinks" as was probably speaking japanese at the time. so yes i guess it was another similar pejorative but do you really have to take people so literally?

i didn't realise that certain chinese produce was unsafe.

whatever he said, he'll never top prince phillip in the racist jibe league. Laughing

nothing in itself. but it's what it could lead to further down the road. don't you find the japanese a little obsessive. aren't many japanese caught up in their own "ethnic self-importance"?

i think the koreans and the chinese are a little concerned by recent developments because of japan's track-record. or at least that's what some newspapers are saying.

I have argued on another forum that the Japanese are not necessarily more racist than anyone else, but they seem to be somewhat unaware of what discrimination is as well as pretty xenophobic for a developed country. As to Ishihara, it's alarming that he consistently makes comments like that one about the Chinese and other foreigners and he is not alone among right-wing politicians, just more open about his views.

Abe himself is not a lot better, with his recent gaffes about the evidence concerning the so called 'comfort' women. Considering his background with relatives that ran slave labor mining during WWII, he hardly represents a new and better Japan. As to teaching people to love their country, wouldn't be better to have them respect the country and learn that on their own? How do you teach patriotism?

Finally, remember that Chinese products made for export generally have to meet much higher quality standards than those manufactured for domestic consumption. As to the mad cow incidents, remember that the Japanese didn't stop eating Japanese beef when the diease was discovered here. Not that I don't disagree with them when they want to refuse meat that was not cut according to the agreement that they had made with the US, but it's interesting that a perceived danger of some things that are foreign seems arbitrary at best.

Ishihara is a racist asshat. That doesn't mean Japanese are. In Australia, Pauline Hanson has said far worse things than him. In the US you have George W. Bush, and while he's not necessarily a racist, he's an ignorant and dangerous fool. Every country has its bigots and its racists and in an ideal world, they'd all be lined up and shot, but it's not and we have to put up with them and the vitriol they vomit forth.
The reason most (white) people in Japan notice that they're 'racist' is because it's sometimes directed at you, i.e., the racial minority. Yes, it's terrible when someone moves to another seat on the train when a white guy sits next to them, but that's life.

lmao. that is a brilliantly funny post (even if it wasn't meant to be). reassuringly scathing.

bush = ignorant and dangerous fool.

it's a mad mad world we live in isn't it?

Why do you assume that so called 'global citizenship' is superior to national citizenship? Global patriotism is such a general term as to be meaningless. Instead of brainwashing kids, we teach them vacuous garbage instead, do we?

yes because it's preferable to devisiveness. pride in ones country should come naturally.
