What about children? I get tired of asking questions around... any good ones that imply movements? |

For children, listing works and can be very simple or more complex. For example:
animals
animals that live in the forest/water/farm
rooms in a house
things you might find in the kitchen
etc., etc.
For movements, are you thinking about TPR? Combining movements can be a springboard from simple stand up, turn around, etc. Try stand up and put your right hand on your head. Then you can even get silly with them. After you've done several, have a good student come lead the class. Just make sure you progress slowly from the very simple with a lot of repetition. Kids usually like this. You can even do a couple of minutes of these during the lesson when they start to get restless.
Maybe these will get you started. Good luck. |

When teaching young children it is absolutely necessary to shed your inhibitions. Young children don't think like adults so there is no danger that you'll be thought of as being eccentric.
As carken said, Total Physical Response is the ideal way to teach children anything. Get them to sing and dance the 'Hokie Pokie'. Even the 'Ipsy Wipsy Spider' song has enough physical movement to amuse kids.
The 'Teacher Says' (Simon Says) game works well with kids and, subject to their level of comprehension and/or what you teach them, don't be afraid to play the game foolishly. i.e. "teacher says put your hands on your head, teacher says put your finger in your left ear, teacher says put your finger in your belly-button, etc".
The run & touch game also works really well with kids. It can be played in connection with a lesson you have taught, or be used as a filler. For example, if you teach them colors have a selection of colored cards at the ready. Spread the cards around the room. Divide the kids up into teams. Gather them at the front of the room. Call out a color and the first one to run and touch the correct colored card earns 1 point for his/her team.
If it's a nice sunny day, take them outside. Introduce new vocabulary, i.e. flower bed, trash can, light pole, etc. Then play the 'run & touch' game.
Kids love to draw. For some lessons get the kids to draw what they have just studied. I used this with a lesson on rooms of a home and furniture therein and got the kids to draw their home and label each room and item of furniture. They were as quiet as sleeping angels for 20 minutes.

With the 'Talking Activities' the questions are not intended to be asked by the teacher. Write the questions and answers (with appropriate 'blank') on the board. Get the kids to stand up and walk around asking each other. |

Two weeks ago I had a class of 30 GRADUATE Uni students for the 2 pm class. They were incredibly lethargic and non-functioning.
So I did TPR - Simon says on them. After about 2 minutes of total confusion and non-comprehension, they reluctantly began to join in. I changed this to "teacher says...." instead, and within 5 minutes I had my usual alert class ready for some serious work.
I asked afterwards how they felt, being treated as kindergarten students. They were too polite to tell me! |

Ok here's a game I played when I was learning English as well back in the days.
Six students go at the front. Everyone else leans their heads down at the desks and holds one finder, or just one of their hands up. The six people who were at the front go and touch the hands of another six people. After that everyone looks up again, and the 6 who were touched have to stand up. The 6 at the front ask "Can you guess who touched you?" and the other six have to make a guess, if they guess right they get to go at the front. And the game continues the same way again I hope this was useful! |
