I've lived in the Yucatan for over a year and have not yet had a gastric "incident." I eat fruits and vegetables after rinsing in tap water. I also cook with tap water. I drink bottled water, though have forgotten and drunk tap water a few times. The main caveat as far as tap water is concerned is the mineral content...lots of lime and calcium which can result in kidney stones, so I'm told.

Regards,

Sharon

Iso - please take a look at my post again. I said Mexicans have an adversion to air conditioning when they have colds. Is this not common where you are too?

Have you guys run into the belief that one shouldn't drink anything cold when one has a cold? It's real common here in Chiapas and doctors swear cold drinks will cause damage.

No - or at least it's not common in this region of Mexico.

It's that big expensive magical box that takes a very hot, sweaty, and humid sauna of a room and converts it into a decent living space.

The last couple of weeks here have been absolutely sweltering - and that's coming from someone who's lived here for three years. Late last night we finally had our first rain of the season, and the temperatures today were a couple of degrees cooler.

I just talked to someone that got very sick from drinking milk. Maybe it was straight from a farm. Its usually OK to drink it like if its pasturized?

Wow, I haven't avoided much but then we were told that the tap water here is safe to drink...you wouldn't want to because it tastes like dirt but we brush out teeth and cook with it. We even make coffee with it (not boiled water) and we've been fine.

We've eaten lettuce and all kinds of veggies everywhere. We were a little concerned at first but all has been ok. I had a stomach infection or some kind of infection anyway a while back but haven't had any real montezuma's - knock on wood. Of course that is Monterrey which is very Americanized so who knows.

I shall take that advice on the tacos though because I do tend to avoid meat from stands and such. Hubby eats them all the time with lots of lime and he's been fine so far.

The boyfriend once bought straight-up farm milk once while he was visiting me and drank it straight (he grew up in a pueblo near Guadalajara), but refused to let me have any without boiling the crap out of it. He explained that if you grow up with the bacteria, you're fine, but it can hurt the uninitiated. Which to me is no great loss, because in the end the stuff tasted way too much like cow. Like if maybe you had licked a cow, and a not particularly clean one at that. (shudder). But the milk-in-a-box is harmless, and tasty in the coffee, too.

Milk in cartons in Mexico, like in other places in the world, is superpastuerized and can sit on the shelf for a month or two without refrigeration (look at the expiration date). After it is opened, one needs to refrigerate the milk Sometimes Mexican have a tradition of going in a group to the farm early to milk the cow and drink its milk. While this is dangerous, most as a sufficient amount of tequila to kill the germs

Gallo:

I lived with a family and when the dad got a cold he stopped showering. For like five days. He swore that was the key to getting rid of the cold (and he smokes like a pack a day.)

I lived in Mexico for five months with no gastric distress. Didn't take extreme precautions, but I did drink those little yogurt drinks daily and was fairly careful about what I chose when eating out.
