Good stuff Tiger Beer. Hmmmm, wonder what David Crystal was talking about then. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read in books then. Especially thick ones.

I would think that the figures in the cyclopedia were for the country iteslf where there must be, particularly in rural areas, whole communities where only a few can function in Tagalog. That would make sense. I concede though that, travelling abroad, you would find it hard to meet a Filipino who doesn't speak Tagalog.

In Kanagawa Ken,
I used to see Filipinas at train stations handing out flyers for their hostess bars. I guess because business was bad.
Now I see Russian women doing it instead.
Some people from the Philippines go to local churches.
Some work at Filipino restaurants.

Some come to Japan illegally. There was an article about that in the Japan Times last week.
Some women think they will come to Japan to work as dancers, but end up as prostitutes.
