hi all
A few questions about teaching in Dubai?
is it possible just to arrive there and find a job?
i hear that having a post grad cert in education is not always required.....is this correct?
how about salaries?
is rent really expensive?
are there universities hiring english speaking foreigners to teach on art based courses?
any info greatly appreciated |

Possible, but not common.

It is required if you want to have a decent employer and a livable wage.

Likely below subsistence on the local economy for someone with no credentials and limited experience.

Very... and rising by the moment. You could only afford shared housing in a not-so-nice area.

I have no idea what this means. Are you saying that you want to teach art?

I was never in a university that had any art program or classes, but some of the new colleges or international schools might have something.

The University of Sharjah has a Fine Arts building in University City - rumour has it a shaikhah expressed an interest in pursuing an Arts degree and it became reality? |

To teach content courses at universities here you normally need a PhD. To teach on a reputable tertiary foundation programme an MA is normally required. The places that hire unqualified staff set their salaries accordingly. The better international schools would require an art teacher to have a teaching qualification, e.g. if British a PGCE. This is not a country where an 'English speaking foreigner' can expect to find a university teaching job merely for being an 'English speaking foreigner.' |

hi
thanks "Iamherebecause" for your reply.
I actually have 10 years esl experience, teaching both asian and european students (in Thailand and the UK).
I have an MA in photography, but i don't have a BA. Neither do I have an esl teaching certificate.
I am not looking for the highest paid job in the world!!.........teaching on a 'reputable tertiary foundation program' would be great.
do you know of any college that teaches art based courses?
thanks for our attention |

Not really. Not yet. However, the UAE and the emirate of Dubai in particular have been the vanguard of Gulf states investing in non-petroleum based industries. For the past few years Dubai has hosted a fledgling film festival. At least two Hollywood-based productions that I know of (one was Syriana) have filmed in locations around the UAE--and not just second unit footage.
I've read in the major English daily recently that an animation production studio is in its planning stages. (http://www.dubaiinternetcity.com/why_dubai_internet_city/affiliates/)
My guess is that artistically inclined nationals may soon find more encouragement and post-secondary training from their government. I would hope so, anyway. |

HCT might look with interest at your related MA, but have you ever taught anything other than ESL?
Also, you don't want to be local hire and lose benefits. So, HCT is a place that you should apply from outside the country.

Sorry, I wasn't quite clear enough... to teach on a tertiary foundation programme your MA would need to be TEFL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics or similar. I suggest you see if there are any openings teaching on the design related HCT courses, or search for companies at Dubai Media City. |
