| Well, since Scots have long done moonlighting, attracted by the glint of sheckels, moonbathing is presumably only a small step sideways. |

Can anyone tell by looking at this address if it is in the city centre? |
Sorry --- just had to
You don't know much about Al Ain, do you?
Al Ain isn't exactly Toronto, NYC, or London. It's not even Vancouver or Montreal. You can get anywhere in 10 minutes fairly easily. |

The address is a POST OFFICE BOX. That is in a post office - probably the Central PO.
Don't they have PO Boxes on the planet that you come from ? |

Yes Stephen, we Scots work for money. Are you telling us you work for nothing?
Here's something to ponder: wherever I go, the local people tell me that the Scots are very different from the English. They describe us as being "open and friendly". Doesn't say much for the Anglo-Saxons, does it? |

It seems my associate, Dmb, is a member of Gods chosen people.
According to Herman, Knoxs goal was to turn Scots into Gods chosen people and Scotland into the New Jerusalem. He wiped out Catholicism and embraced Calvinism. Scottish society enveloped these principles.
Article 21 of the EU charter prohibits discrimination on any ground such as race, color, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, disability, age or sexual orientation and also discrimination on the grounds of nationality.

No In Ireland they don't. With the exception of Dublin where we say D24 or D6 depending on the region.
I know in France (like Britain) they have those terribly long numbers but people can generally tell which city one is from if they are familiar with the number.
I am always being asked for a PO box or code for my home address and I get some strange looks when I say there isn t one. |

A Post Office Box is a box at the post office. You get a key and go there and take your mail.
You seem to be confusing a Post Office Box with a Postal Code (Zip Code in the US).
A Post Code will tell you where a place is in some countries - but in the Emirates like in most of the Middle East people use PO Boxes becasue there are no household deliveries of postal items. In the UAE and elsewhere in the Gulf the postal code simply operates as a double check on the PO Box Number. |

Ok thats good to know. Seems kinda strange but ill have to get used to it.
Our post offices are still funded by the Government and therefore deliver to all sorts of mad places even in the middle of rural Ireland. |

Except DHL, Express mail, and FASTMAIL, the postal items are delivered to your door, even if you live in a tent! |

If you go to the UAE section, you will see that the OP has posted an update of her first impressions of life in Al-Ain.

Lynda
A quick lesson on the Emirates... they don't have addresses. I saw a wonderfully humorous article about that some years back. Streets may have a sign, but everyone will call it a different name... buildings lack numbers. You give directions by landmark, and it all works out much easier than you think it will. |
Sooooo true!!
The lack of addresses drove me insane at the beginning. Even when I would get business cards taxi drivers would look at me blankly or tell me they don t read arabic or English. In Al Ain Like VS said the best thing to do is remember a significant landmark that is near where you want to go and then get there from that landmark.
Explaining where my school is, is a nightmare when they dont know where it is. I just say the area and circle round until they ve found it. Thankfully taxis are cheap in Al Ain |
