There are many things that are fake in Saudi but fake vegetarian meat is one thing they have avoided.

Still, a vegetarian who thinks their food should taste like meat to be "substantial and filling" is a worthy trophy for one day's internet surfing.

Actually, the late Linda McCartney made a career out of marketing the chewy cardboard known as TVP.

But hey, I suppose she had to earn a few pounds for her family by whatever means possible.

Diner Hunt: This soy protein is nothing like back home. It's all the wrong shape.

Waiter Basil: Oh dear. What shape do you usually have? Mickey Mouse shape? Smarties shape? Amphibious landing craft shape? Poke in the eye shape?

Isn't this the whole point of being a vegetarian; to avoid the taste of meat!

So why would a vegetarian want to have vegetarian food that tastes like meat...why not just eat the real thing! Seems silly to me.

Maybe a grocery availability list would suit the vegetarians concerned for their well-being who come to Saudi? Maybe we can arrange a fax to all vegetarians of food availablity from each grocery store, if only they would provide a fax number...

Seriously, everyone eats vegetables, they exist in Saudi Arabia. Many vegetarians survive comfortably in Saudi. Tofu exists in all grocery stores as does a small selection of veggie burgers and fake meat. I hope that helps, we can't exactly do a brand name breakdown and cost analysis. For detailed market research, try a PR firm.

Queen of Sheba, you mentioned that stores carry a small selection of fake meat, which contradicts the other posters' information. What kind of fake meat, and are they found in most stores? I think you mentioned veggie burgers.

There are different reasons why vegetarians like texturized soy protein that resembles real meat. Here are a few.

1. Some vegetarians like the taste of meat, but choose to be vegetarian because they don't believe animals should be killed for consumption.

2. Some vegetarians grew up eating meat, as children, and would like to eat meat. They may have a different reason for being vegetarian (such as health issues, including allergies or avoidance of red meat).

3. Also, the vegetarian industry's soy and wheat gluten products have revolutionized vegetarian eating. I am a vegetarian, but find tofu very bland, and do not like its texture. We now have hundreds of options. No one wants to wake up everyday and see tofu on the menu. We get seasoned, delicious, protein-filled soy and wheat gluten - sauteed, baked, fire roasted, grilled in every which way and form. America is probably the leader, with companies like Lightlife, Cedarlane, Amy's Kitchen, and Tofurky. And every time I'm in New York City, I make a trip to my favorite vegetarian restaurant, "Zen Palate."

Why should YOU be a vegetarian? Click the link.

I get it by the way, I used to be a vegetarian, and I just think your concerns are self centered and strange for someone willing to move to a foreign country this calls for flexibility, which you obviously lack. On the one hand you cant even get your mind around the fact that vegetarian food exists here, and on the other hand you have these unrealistic expectation for Saudi Arabia to be vegan friendly and organic! When moving to Saudi Arabia, there are many more things to be worried about that sustenance. If food is such a serious issue, dont come here, you wont find everything you are used to, just the basics already mentioned. Your eating habits are your own concern and you have bizarre and unrealistic high expectations of grocery stores and people on this forum to care about your food tastes and favorite brands. I suggest shipping over cartons of your favorite vegetarian delights here, or not coming here at all if this is all you care about and if this is any indication of your level of flexability and tolerance for change. Things wont be to your liking and you will be forced to eat unorganic vegetables, and tofu full of gluten and preservatives.

Well, some vegetarians may like it, hence the success of "Lady" McCartney's cottage industry. Others, however, might find the thought of eating a microwaved cornflakes box more appealing.

Here's the other side of the coin regarding delicious veggie burgers:
Advances in technology make it possible to produce isolated soy protein from what was once considered a waste product - the defatted, high-protein soy chips - and then transform something that looks and smells terrible into products that can be consumed by human beings. Flavorings, preservatives, sweeteners, emulsifiers and synthetic nutrients have turned soy protein isolate, the food processors' ugly duckling, into a New Age Cinderella.
http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/avoid_soy.htm

It is rather amusing actually; most of the 'research' talking about the benefits of soy is produced by tame scientists in the pay of the multinational soya bean industry. And most of the research pointing out its dangers for health is funded and propagated by tame scientists in the pay of the multinational dairy and meat industries. Choose your intellectual poison.

Actually it may be the same thing. The only use which soy protein has GRAS status for is as a binder for cardboard.

Speaking of soy, I have read that the notion that Japanese longevity is due to soya is actually a myth, because the Japanese actually do not eat that much soya, stereotypes aside.
