Yes I would to find out too. I hear the YMCA is nice. Can you throw a few places that is cheap and decent near Taipei Main Station. Also the street address will be helpful upon entering the country.

You can find some useful links here.

There is an official youth hostel in the K-Mall building opposite Taipei Station. Happy Family Hostel is also very close to the station.

It is no longer really essential to stay near Taipei Station as the MRT makes many parts of the city easy to access. You can catch trains from Songshan or Banqiao stations and the latter has the High Speed Rail. There are also inter-city buses departing from various points around the city.

Recommend: TaiwanMEX hostel. It's close to the MRT station (just one stop north of Taipei Main). The owner is incredibly nice and generous. Small accommodations but two bathrooms (one western) with rarely a wait. Economical and well -placed. Average 200-400 NT a night depending on your room.

For a larger budget check out the Hotel Purple Garden on the same road. Rooms at 1100-1900NT a night. Clean, quiet and servicable hotel with a view of a feral cat colony.

I stayed in the Happy Family hostel near the train station in April, 2006, and it was a complete hole. The ad said a private room, but in reality it was a normal-sized room divided up by plywood into three parts. Stuffy and hot (no AC, no fan, and only a small window) and dirty (insects, grime, nasty floors and bathroom). There are, I later learned, 2 Happy Family hostels. But after my experience I'm put off by both of them.

I second the recommendation for the Key Mall Traveller's Hostel. It's right across from Taipei Main Station, and you can go through the subway terminal and take the elevator right up near the entrance of the building (so you're not lugging stuff around in the rain). It's on the 15th floor of the building next to the large Mitsukoshi Building. (I forget the name of the buildng with the hostel . . . K-Mall?) Anyway, it's all right for a couple of days.

http://www.hostels.com/en/availability.php/HostelNumber.16947 (they changed the layout around, so the pics are a little dated)

And yes, I read the date on the post . . . just throwing the information out there for next time.

The one in Shida was pretty good. The guy was a bit of a dick, but we met some interesting people there (well if you consider people organising hookers for their room interesting...)

I've been told that I can get a nice hotel room for 550NT per night?

Any recommedations for Hotels near Taipei Main Station in that
price range?

Is it safe to give out Credit Card # to RSVP a room? Eight Elephants require this and I'm one to pay cash as I don't trust places I don not know.

I've been told Paradise Hotel offers a private room, private bath for 700nt per night, 5 min for Taipei Main Station.

Can anyone confirm this? It's not listed on their website as that price range.

That would be ideal for me for temporary lodging untill I figure out where my school will be.

I'd recommend the World Scholar House... very nice and friendly there. A lot of people stay there for quite awhile.

Second the world scholar house. I stayed there, it was quite nice. It's a good place to go when you are first getting on your feet in Taiwan. It's on top of a murderously steep hill, so just make sure you get familiar with the shuttle that takes you down to the QiZhang Station.
