Did anyone hear the 'Flower of Scotland' sung by two opera singers at the Scotland France rugby match on Saturday? No wonder we lost, it was hardly uplifting. It was total rubbish. (we do clutch at straws after defeat- it wasn't even our usual glorious in defeat)

All the anthems have been crucified by using operatic versions, except the 17 verses of the Georgian one.

Hear, hear. Two stuffed shirts can't compete with 50 000 throats. I wonder if it's a sop to the sponsors?

I'm convinced the 'English' one has a chord progression from the "Robin of Sherwood" theme. A nice little bit of subversion-lite.

Now all they have to do is scrap that sub-Disney bollocks at the head of each program (Dame Kiri warbling on about 'the world in union' to the tune of I vow to thee my country) and we're sorted.

I will definitely 'be an Ozzie'on Saturday. i might even drink Fosters to show my loyalty. Mind you if you did win on Saturday you might stop going on about 1966!

There is absolutely nothing like a lone piper playing in the mist (OK fog). Most evocative, romantic music in the world!

I never saw that particular dish available in Oz.
Dmb, at least 1966 was a little more recent than 1328 (or whenever Bannockburn was),

I think you'll find that 1328 was when Edward III of England accepted the Treaty of Northampton, finally recognising Scotland as an independent country, and Robert Bruce as King of Scots. The Battle of Bannokburn was over a decade earlier, in 1314, where Bruce defeated Edward II.

If you're going to insult each other you might as well get your facts straight Razz

dmb - you were very prescient; that was a bit painful. Shame about Wales too.

I have to say from an English perspective that it would have been great to see Scotland and Wales in the European Championship. I just wish the Scots could get over their Auld Enemy hang-ups. Most of the time it's just great banter, like it can be with the Aussies, but some people seem to take it so seriously.

Sue, we've had centuries of aggression, condescension and Margaret Thatcher to contend with, so you'll forgive us if we don't become anglophiles overnight.
If some of our southern neighbours possessed a modicum of humility they'd find themselves less unpopular in the world. The jingoist media is largely responsible for fostering aggressive English nationalism, with its talk of Jocks, Frogs and Krauts and references ad nauseam to Agincourt, Trafalgar and the two World Wars. They'd have us believe that the European Union is a life-threatening virus to be resisted at all costs. Remember the furore surrounding the appointment of that bally foreigner Sven the Swede as England coach? Sir Bobby Charlton's remaining hairs nearly fell out!
I spent eight years studying, working and wenching south of de border and get on as well with the English as with any other brand of humanity: It's just that I don't want them to win at anything, not even tiddlywinks. I prefer that kind of rivalry to kicking someone's head in for being born in a different part of the globe.
Iain, it was Eddie the Second to whom Bruce gave a thick lug. He was later murdered by nobles who administered a red-hot poker suppository fashion (another version says it was a pipe and glowing coals - equally nasty). Do you think the same treatment would inspire our national side to perform better?
