My university has agreed to pay me over the summer, if I sign on for a second year. Sounds great, right?
Well, the new contract term will be 12 months, from July 1, 2007 to July 1, 2008. But, isn't there some rule that says the Visa expiry date should run one month (or at least several weeks) longer than the teaching period?
I'm hesitant to sign this new contract because there is no leeway if I decide to change schools next year. How can I possibly finish teaching by the end of June (or perhaps a week later), input the students' final marks and then pack my stuff and get the hell off to wherever, before my Visa expires on July 1st?
My university says they are prohibited from applying for Residence Permits/Work Visas of longer than 12 months. Does anyone know - is this true - can there be 'extenuating circumstances'? |

Complete Guide for
Foreigners Working
in China
Foreign Experts and English Teachers edition
with section for students studying in China13.
How To extend visa or residence card?
In case of need to continue stay or residence in
China after expiration of the via or residence
permit, the expert should bring the valid
passport, residence permit and letter from the
host institution to public security bureau to
apply for extension and fill in the application
form o\for extension of foreigner's credentials. |
This would indicate that with a letter of invitation from your next school you could apply for an extension before your current residence card expires. As long as you have a valid RC, the visa date in your passport is irrelevant.
However, I'm sure there's lots of people on here who have done this. |

I have not heard of such a rule and I doubt that it exists. Your legal right to remain in the country depends upon the fact that you are employed. So for the above to be true you would be holding the legal right to be here for work but not working for that last month!
I would go with the other suggestions in this thread. See if you can line things up with another school toward the end of your current contract so that everything is in order when you complete the current contract. Then you can just jump over to the new school. |

The problem I see with this is if your RP ends at the same time as the contract ..then your PSB visit will yield a tourist visa with around two weeks to leave the country unless you can convince them to extend for travel...then with a tourist visa ..the ability to change to a Z which is converted to a RP is ore difficult..
If you want an extra month on the visa ...request it be incl. in the contract...now the trick is to get them to agree..so try it t this way....
tell them what you want...they will tell you why it is not possible..
tell them what you want..they will tell you why it is not practical..
then tell them what you want...they well tell you it is not the normal way they do things...
then tell them what you want..let them know your not in a hurry..after all you can always get a job.... |

This is exactly the problem two of us have had at our school. We only have one week after finishing exams and grading to get a new visa. We asked about it in the beginning and they said it wasn't possible to extend. I think it's a ploy they use to try and get you to extend your contract with them instead of getting another job somewhere else. But our school is the worst anyway, so we aren't surprised. Also a couple of us want to return to our countries for the summer anyway. |
