I drove to Distrito Federal in December and had no problems. The most important thing is to buy insurance when you get your permit. I have had friends thrown in jail for a simple fender bender until their families sent them the money for repairs; insurance will save that problem. In the city here you can get a year of reliable coverage for about 3000 pesos.
Many peeps will tell you not to drive at night. If your driving the tolls, it isnt that big of a deal. I have done it many times and have never had a problem. I wouldn't recommend the libres though at night.
The green light issue when entering is funny. I got a green light and still had to pull over. It cost me about 100 pesos and I was on my way in less than a minute. I recommend the non declare line. As for my understanding if you are working here you can bring your belonging without the need to declare, but dont take my word for it. I never go through the declare line, it is just asking to give a bribe. But be aware it can cost you. I had to pay 1100 pesos once to police in the city here. Make sure you have the embassy phone number!!!!!!!! That is the one thing that they are scared of. And it saved my car from being taken.
As for the Federal check points. Dont worry too much. Most of them are for leaving Mexico. There are few worries on the way into the country. |
