That's a ridiculous stereotype. You really think that's why people do body modification? As partiatone said, there are people who want to be 'rebels' and some of them get piercings and tattoos and some don't. There is really no direct correlation. People do all kinds of things with their appearance, such as pick a style of clothing, a haircut, etc. Piercings and tattoos are, for many, just an extension of that and have nothing to do with rebellion. I didn't get piercings to look like a rebel. So I don't think it's fair when people say I am asking to be treated as an outcast.
Just because many people hold mistaken ideas about piercings doesn't mean they are valid opinions. And if someone wouldn't hire my just because of them... well they are probably not the kind of employer I would want to work for anyway. And, let me repeat myself, I have never had a problem because of my body mods in Japan, and I have met many other people who also say it's no big deal. Unless you're of Japanese descent and trying to go undercover, we all look like freaks to the Japanese anyway, so a few extra pieces of jewelry hardly make a difference. |

| If the girl in the picture is looking for a job, I'd be glad to get her an interview at a neodymium magnet factory... |

I agree, but in a conservative society when it comes to business attire, body piercings are probably not the way to go.
Also clothes are a little easier to dispense with as you can change them daily, how do you change a body piercing, cosmetic surgery perhaps?
Of course, you can always hope it grows over. |

Sometimes you just have to tip your hat. This is one of those cases. |

...it's not a ridiculous stereotype if it's true. that's the difference between what I claimed and what shuize claimed.

All foreigners look like freaks to the Japanese? You're more reasonable than that, aren't you?
Speaking of body modification...
Look out Japanese people, here we come to teach your children!

Canuck beat me to the post. I was going to ask the very same question:
So, in the eyes of the average Japanese person these "freaks":
http://damncoolpics.blogspot.com/2007/03/extreme-body-piercing.html
Are viewed exactly the same as these "freaks":

Right kdynamic? |

Shuize, some of those pics made me feel physically sick. WTF?!?!?!?!? Why would you want to put a fork in your tongue? Or a couple of bumps in your head? Or seventy nine pieces of inch long metal through your face?
I don't get it....

See - the thing with growing up is realizing that you might not "get" everything in this world. Hell, I don't "get" why people wear socks with sandals, or what drives people to never leave their small towns and marry the first person who said yes. I don't "get" how people can drink every day, or even every weekend. I don't "get" how people can eat fish, or squid, or horse.
But see - the thing is, I don't ostracize others for their choices.
Trying to get an idea of how potential employers might react to a nostril piercing and EXPECTING that a culture accomodate such a personal choice are very different things. |

| No I get why people might want to have a couple of piercings or a tattoo, I just don't get the extremes that are in the photos on Shuize's link. Take a look at the photos & don't get your knickers in a knot. |

Oh I've seen the photos. In fact the guy with the pointed ears is Tye -- I met him through a friend a year or so ago.
But the extremity of what they've done is beside the point - it's not for you to "get" or judge, it was their choice --- like a small tattoo or piercing may be someone elses, or shaving your head might be yours. *shrug* |
