Hello one and all. I wanted to get your attention in order to try and get some help.
As the title states I am 52 and a virgin in the EFL summer teaching business. I wanted some advice with regards to where I should apply for a summer job in the UK.
I have read some of the very informative threads but I am still not sure who will take an oldie but goodie like me and if I would fit in.
I hold a BA English, teaching certificate and an MA Educational counselling. Been teaching EFL for 17+ years to all ages.
I see that you are all good sports on here so if any nice person could point me in the right direction I would be much obliged.
Thanks so much |

try looking at tefl.com for summer jobs in the UK. A lot of applications to summer school are a case of serendipity - it may be great it may not be, it depends on the other people you end up working with. Just remember that the schools paying the most will have been able to be picky and the others will often need to hire at short notice. Are there any particular areas you want to work in? |

Firstly, thanks for the reply.
I have been offered a job with Embassy in their South Bank school with accommodation for 230pounds a week and 30 teaching hours.
It is in the middle of London which sounds good to me but 30 hours sounds a lot of teaching.
Not sure if I should take it or not as it is one of the only replies that I got.

OK, first off, 230/30 = 7.66 GBP per taught hour, which is pretty poor. It's possible to find schools that pay up to 12 quid an hour. 30 hours is a hell of a lot of teaching!
You say accommodation is included, which is probably how they justify the pay rate. However, I presume you'll still have to pay rent/mortgage on somewhere while you're working in the summer school. You don't say if any other duties are involved apart from teaching. Does "accommodation" mean making yourself available 24/7 if the kids need anything?
I suggest you keep looking. |

About three summers ago I was paid the same for teaching mornings only, and a few desultory duties at other times which I didn't mind: even volunteered for the 5-a-side footie! 30 hours for that money is ridiculous, and in central London you should be paid _more_ as you certainly won't have the time or energy to benefit from your location. If you calculate prep time plus wasted unpaid the rate works out pretty low. As ever it's the accommodation that swings the balance, but as lol says, be careful over your other duties. |

Yup I am mulling over another offer from SUL language schools for a school in Basingstoke and it sounds better. They include 8% holiday pay and it is a 9 day course and they pay for 9 mornings and 4 lessons (45 min lessons) 322.85 (8% holiday pay inc.) . They say that I may have a chance of some afternoon work playing/supervising sports and games with the kids.
