| I just opened my residential tax this year and I am shocked to say the least. I live in Nishi ku Osaka and I have to pay 210 000 yen over 4 installments. This is more than double what i paid last year. |

| Is the end of May-June when the residential tax bill usually arrives? |

You can break it up into 12 monthly installments if you want. Go to the tax section in your ward office and ask them to do it. They will print you a new booklet of receipts (I only had to wait about fifteen minutes for mine) and you can pay each month. |

Mine is exactly 199,000 yen for the year.
My school is taking it out in monthly installments of 16,500. Hopefully, I will see a difference in the income tax rate to make up for it... |

I'm not sure how long you've been here, but I assume from the above statement that you haven't just arrived in Japan - apologies & ignore the rest of this post if you have.
But haven't you noticed a difference in the amount of income tax already? I think you should have seen the amount of income tax deducted per month this year is less than it was last year. Is this not the case? Mine is just over half what it used to be. If your employer is deducting the same amount of income tax per month now as they were last year, then that would seem a bit strange.
I am assuming, of course, that your income tax is deducted monthly and that you're not like, say, self-employed people, who pay it all at the end of the year. |

My bad news hit today as well. 275,000 yen.
Also been given the option of 4 installments. Question though, next month I will be leaving Kanagawa to move to Nagano. Seeing as this is dependent on where you live does anyone know if you can pay your ward tax from kanagawa from another province? Seems like the only options may be to pay it all up while im still here or make the quarterly trips back to Kanagawa to pay them. Not really wanting to do either. |

| I really must have been living in a park on cup noodles then, cos my bill isn't much over 70,000 yen (unless I misread what is in fact a 700,000 yen demand for years of not paying). |

| Hi Yawarakajin... Yes, you can pay your residential tax from anywhere in Japan. Don't worry! The only thing is, it might be only one bank that will accept the payment. Last year my friend paid Fukuoka tax in Tokyo... It was no problem to do it but it could only be done at the Resona Bank. So just check at your ward office before you go. |

Thanks azarashi, good to know. Would you also mind helping me out by paying it for me? |

| Damn I thought 184,000 yen was high. I don't recall seeing threads like this before. Is this the first year that it has been ridiculously high or is this what people usually pay? |

| It seems to be about double last year's amount. There was something that came with my tax return form that suggested as much and there is an explanation of it that came with my tax bill as well- I haven't got around to reading it properly yet though. |

I can't beat canuck, but mine was still Y174500...double last year. However, I haven't seen any corresponding drop in the amount of tax being taken out of my regular paycheck, and I just got a panicked e-mail from the kencho (my employers) saying they're worried that taxes have been miscalculated. Is it possible they didn't know this was coming and didn't adjust federal taxes on our paychecks? |

From what I understand it's a percentage of the previous year's earning.
Therefore if you were only here for 6 months of 2005-2006 you would pay, for example, 100,000 yen.
Now, you earn your wage for the entire 2006-07 period and you will pay 200,000 yen.
I believe it's also based on where you live. I believe that is why it is mandatory for you to inform the goverment of a move, so they can change the info on your gaijin card/update their databases and charge you the appropriate amount for your residential tax. |
