Hello. I heard a rumor lately that only certain University degrees are recognized by the Taiwan government. If the University your degree is from isn't on their list, you're out of luck. How would I be able to find out of this university www.manipal.edu is recognized or not? Thanks.

I'm not totally sure, but it seems likely that it would not be accepted for the purposes of teaching English. It maybe recognised for something else. Are you from an English speaking country Jared? If not, then you will not be able to work legally as an English teacher anyway. |

Well if I can't read the Chinese, I can't understand what they're saying. And when I click on English, it only talks about the Universities within Taiwan. |

I wouldn't worry, India wasn't actually on the Chinese list. |

Jared,
For the purposes of working as a foreign English teacher in Taiwan, you need to meet certain criteria. 1. Be a native speaker of English. 2. Have a passport from one of the countries the authorities here accept as English speaking. 3. Have a bachelor's degree or 2 year diploma with tesl from a school recognized by the government here and-- again-- from a country recognized as English speaking (sorry, India isn't one of such countries, though we all know many Indians speak English).
Your degree is from an Indian university and doesn't meet the normal criteria. All anyone here can advise, with the info available to us, is that you likely won't qualify. But, then, we're not the government. I recommend you take your degree to the nearest Taiwan economic and cultural office and ask them yourself. It's the only way to get an answer for sure. |

SeriousFun thanks for posting that list. I have been looking for that for a long time. The list includes universities from non-English speaking countries so is obviously not English-teaching specific but would instead cover all categories of employment for foreigners.
I think that the OP's situation may be an interesting one.
We all know that to qualify for a work permit to teach English that you must have a passport from a country recognized by the Taiwan government as an English speaking country. Also that you must have a degree. But is there a stipulation that the degree must be from an English speaking country?
OP I encourage you to follow the advice from TS and contact the government on this one directly. Even then you may not get the correct answer but it may be a good guide. Ultimately the only way to know for sure is to have a potential employer apply for a work permit on your behalf. |

Hmmm.. in retrospect, perhaps not. I think a foreigner who completed a degree in Taiwan would be able to qualify for a work permit with their degree. However, it is general knowledge that the MOE here checks degrees against lists of accepted schools here. Not sure how they would view a degree from India.
I suggested that OP contact a TECO office because his credentials lie outside the norm for most applying for work here as teachers and that may prevent him from obtaining a work permit. I don't think that people here will be able to give a definitive answer to OP's query, at least not with the knowledge we have available to us.
I think OP should either do that or contact some of the larger schools or recruitment companies who handle large amounts of work permit applications. They will be better able to tell OP what his chances are.
This is all assuming OP is a citizen of an English speaking country, of course. |

I can just get a degree at a Taiwan University? Would a BA in Chinese Language from a Taiwan University actually work? |

Yes, but it wouldn't always be necessary to do the degree in Chinese. There are some programs offered in English. |
