Apparently I'm going to Kawaguchi in Saitama. Don't really know much about it but from what I can tell it seems like a pretty sweet location. Might be a bit expensive though.

Mothy,

Good to hear that you know where you are headed. I have yet to hear from my Contracting Organization so I am still clueless as to where in Shizuoka. All in all, we are headed to Nihon! Excitement abounds!

Best of luck,

I lived in Kawaguchi for a year. It's not a bad place. Less than 30 minutes to most parts of Tokyo without having to change trains multiple times.

I didn't find it too expensive of a place.

Any questions, fire away, or send me a PM.

Wow, I didn't know people from the US had to get FBI criminal background checks (I'm from the UK, and wasn't asked for anything like that when I was on JET from '99-'02). Is that a recent thing, or has it always been the case for you guys? (Please feel free to ignore this question if you feel it's inappropriate to the thread; that is, Congrats on getting onto JET, and good luck wherever you wind up!).

Since I was only accepted this year I don't know if the FBI background check has always been required. But I've mentioned it in front of ex-JETs before and seen it discussed on other forums before but you're the first person I've heard express any surprise about it. So I suspect it's been around for awhile anyway.

I'm leaving out of Houston and will be in Saitama City. Anyone in the area feel free to pm me [email protected]. Also, for the Houston JET group, I'm compiling a list of everyone's placements, hometowns, and contact info. If anyone wants to be added to this list e-mail me with your name, hometown, departure airport, prefecture, city/town, and e-mail and I will add you.

Oh, and the FBI background check is in fact new either this year (or maybe they started it last year, but it's new either way).

I not only had to provide my New Zealand police record, I also had to provide records for all countries in which I've lived for over a year. The South Korean police record only took about five weeks to come through, but the Vietnamese one would have required me to petition the local People's Committee back in Hanoi. Apparently this is the first year that international records have been required for JET and the details haven't all been worked out, so there was some leeway on that. Thankfully.

Hey, fat_chris! I'll be in Shizuoka-Ken as well. I guess I'll be seeing you at the group A orientation.
