| yeah, i'm curious as to whether this is going to lead to government smack-downs all around the eikaiwa industry, or whether nova was the only one that blatant. |

sallycat, that is what I was thinking too when I said that this could set a precedent.
I know for a fact that some eikaiwa schools offer make-up classes which isn't honoured if there are no available timeslots. I think a lot depends on the wording of the contracts. This could open the floodgates though. |

Ugh...I just got my acceptance letter too! I think it may be time to apply at a few more places...or consider grad school. |

| I feel bad for Nova employees, current and future. I do think that if Nova goes down, it's going to bring in a lot of business for all the other eikaiwas which is good for the rest of us. |

I think it's going to hurt NOVA in the short term and maybe help them in the long run. What's probably going to happen is that they are going to lose some money, pay a lot of people, lose contracts, lose potential contracts, close marginal schools and do less hiring abroad. With the vast turnover NOVA has, it will simply be a matter of transferring current teachers, from location to location, to fill the gaps as teachers quit.
All of that will cause NOVA to be more careful, frugal and trim the fat. To adjust during the transition, there will probably be lots of overtime, for a period of time, for NOVA teachers, depending on the area. Basically, more overtime than usual.
The summer in Japan sucks, with the heat and humidity. Combined with the current exchange rate, and the recent news, the departures will start to trickle through the NOVA system. Let the musical chairs begin.
After a year, I assume it will be business as usual. Expect more and more NOVA commercials on TV as the six month suspension expires.

Nova teachers didn't get their checks today. The higher-ups claim it's a simple banking error...Either this is an extremely unfortunate coincidence, or all the dire predictions are beginning to take form.
For all of my brethren with plans to leave for that new Nova job in a few months, it's time to look elsewhere. I hear India is hiring.........*beep*! |

maybe. but nova has been radically understaffing branches for a long time in an attempt to stop hemorraging money (which is, of course, what lead to students demanding refunds because they were unable to book lessons). there is unlikely to be any more fat left to trim. and "more overtime" may not turn up: paying teachers to work overtime is expensive, and nova is likely to try to find a way to avoid doing so. after a year it may or may not be business as usual: i wouldn't place money either way. but nova-ites should be aware that those at the top are used to massaging the truth to make it more palatable: hiring freezes that were obvious to everybody have been routinely denied for a while. |

We finally got the money into our account at 1 or so, 12 hours late so not too bad. Everyone is really worried though. We haven't had overtime since March in the MMC and there have been a lot of free lessons as of late. With this more students will probably leave and maybe they will stop hiring. Who knows? The MMC will probably be the last to go but I think many of us are making plans to get a new job or leave the country just in case. |

| Well, I quit Nova in February to pursue a teaching qualification in Melbourne. I had been vaguely regretting leaving, seems I made the right choice. |
