What city are you teaching in and what do you think of it? I am trying to decide what city i would be most comfortable in. Any suggestions or advice? |

I spent two years in East Taipei - Min Sheng Dong Lou area - not far from the Hard Rock. Love the town, loved the area.
Housing was pricey in the area but it was very convenient for business English classes in the evenings - I could walk to most of them as it was the finance and business district. |

I spent three years in Hsin-chu. It had everything an expat could want and at the same time retained the local TW culture. It was a simple 10 minute scooter ride into the mountains, which would allow you to get away from the concrete city. It is also directly on the train line, so travel was convenient.
I enjoyed it. |

come to the dirty south....you can cut the air with a knife, but at least you'll be able to save enough money to buy yourself a REALLY nice knife... |

In that case, you might want to consider Kaohsiung or Taichung, where housing is not as expensive as in Taipei, and they have pretty decent nightlife. |

What are some pros and cons about each place and which you prefer if you had to choose to live?
I'm on a budget and trying to pay off student loans. What I'm looking for is an offer for 600NT to start @ 18-24 hours/wk, studio apt 10,000NT, good transportation system, close to conviniences for shopping, love beaches and a laid back atmosphere.
Feedback please? |

Kaohsiung has everything but the transportation system, its just called a scooter here....and the beaches are only about 1.5 hrs away, tops....and the $600 to start might be pushing it, settle for closer to $585 and maybe you'll be in luck |

I had two different apartments in Hsinchu, both were 2 bedroom, one bath. The first one was 17,000 NT a month. The second was 12,000 NT a month.
I now live in a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in Taichung City and I pay 10,000 NT a month for it. And this is a new building, not a piece of crap like a lot of the apartments here. I'm not sure about rental prices in Kaohsiung, but Taichung is a good place to live if you want to save money. |

Is transportation an issue in cities like Kaoshiung and Taichung since there is no subway?
WHere I live the buses are slow. I'm not sure If I feel comfortable with a scooter. We'll see. |

Taiwan has a very good transportation system. The busses go everywhere, and they are usually on time (and cheap too). And now, with the new bullet train, you can get to nearly every major city in Taiwan in under 2 hours. |
