|
|
Hello everyone,
My name is Nick, I'm a 20 year old from Australia. I've only recently gotten my TESOL certificate.
I applied for many jobs in China, got plenty of offers. But the one I am most seriously considering is this one.
Kings International English School, 40 hours a week, 10000 yuan a month. Airfaires reimbursed 50% after 6months, 100% after 12 months.
The school they want me to work at is located in Fuzhou City,
Accomodation + living expenses should only cost me about 2000-3000 a month. (maximum)
I've been wanting to work in Fuzhou, and this pays great - so it looks like a good offer.
BUT, I heard from someone they are not licensed, so I should not go there.
I also found a post on these forums dated May last year, the teacher had a bad experience there, was unable to get a working visa, was not properly paid, was lied to etc etc etc...
Does anyone know if the school is a good/legitimate school or not?
Anyway I can find out if they are licensed or not?
If you have anything to contribute I'd love to hear it.
Nick. |

IMO this is NOT that of a good offer. Let's assume an apartment costs 1000 RMB a month, then you are left making 9000 RMB a month teaching 40 hours a week. That comes to 56.25 RMB an hour which is like making 4500 RMB a month teaching 20 hours a week at a college/university, 3600 RMB a month teaching 16 hours a week, or 3150 teaching 14 hours week. For that pay rate, I'd rather be teaching at a college/university. You'd be insane to work 40 hours a week teaching because all you'd have to do is to give it a week or two, and you'll soon discover just how exhausting it can be. To me, King's offer is just average or may even be a bit low for southern China.

Insist that you'd only come to China with a Z visa and ask them to send you the invitation and visa notice. If they tell you to come with a L visa or F visa, then you know something is not quite right. |

Actually, as far as contracts are concerned in China, even 16 classroom hours a week is considered full-time.

Pay no mind to the "free Chinaese lessons" as they are usually not as they seem and may be withheld (thus breaching) or used against you; and they are taught by a teacher at the school who is, in my experience, forced to do it unpaid and unwilling, thus not a positive experience. Do it all on your own-you will learn more this way. |
The girl who taught me came in with a piece of scrap paper and hungry eyes. She asked: "What shall I teach you?" and then fell limp.
She just kept watching me with those hungry eyes, waiting for me to "make something happen."
I spent the next two weeks teaching her how to teach me before I finally told her I'd rather teach myself. |

Hey nick2124, I have a question:
What's your objective? Are you here on a gap year, or something like that? Or is it a "I'm packing my bags for Asia and gonna give it a go" kinda thing?
The reason I ask is that your intention might have some bearing on what sort of job you end up choosing.
If you're here for a year of fun and adventure, low hours in a cool place (nature or temples or whatever) would be key.
But, if the latter objective, well, you're young. Why not hit one of the big cities (sell your youth and oh-so-lovely western looks)? A cruddy contract in a big city as your first point of contact with China won't be as bad as a crap one in the boonies. You'll meet lots of people and make many connections.
A while back, I started a foray into Japan with a standard deal at a big language mill (ECC Osaka). That was the springboard for six years of totally awesome times: cool jobs, nice cash, hot chicks, the works.
Lots of adventures to be had in big Asian cities, young Jedi... |

I worked at King's.
Recently i was in Quanzhou and 4 of my friends still work at King's and I hung out with a few new teachers.
They recently changed the contract where you now have to teach up to 7 hours a day, do lots of extra activites where they may pay you, and maintain office hours as well. 5 days a week, 2 scattered days off a week, and sometimes you gotta be there at 9 am and other time noon or so.
And they CAN NOT GET YOU A Z VISA. Although they may advertise that they can, they can not still get one even though over a year ago they told me to come on a tourist visa and they will get me a Z. They never did and most who work there have to go to Hong Kong on a regular basis or teach illegally on F visas.
So, take your chances but be prepared to gamble and lose. Be prepared to have to pay your own expenses and leave the country on a regular basis and take your chances on working on an F visa and of course take your chances on getting cheated....
And there are 3 kings locations all operated by the same crew. |
