Hey gang,

I will be heading to Saigon perhaps end of July, or near that time anyway. From what I have gathered, there are a huge number of Chinese there. Because I lived in China for five years and speak the language somewhat OK, I thought it would be best to move into the Chinese area/district 3? I think someone said, or is it 5?

Because there are so many Chinese there, I am thinking I will be at some advantage without knowing the local Viet language, right or wrong?

I am planning to wing a couple of months until I get hold of the whole situation. My big question is, should I land in that hotel district area first until I kind of talk to some local expats and get my bearings? Or should I go straight to the Chinese area and check into a hotel there for a few weeks/month until I get up and running?

Oh great, district 5 then, but as you say, so many English speakers in district 1 makes that very viable too.

I am really looking forward to Saigon/Vietnam. Did five years in southern China (Guangzhou) and so it will be a nice change and I found myself eating at Viet restaurants more and more the last year I was in China. The Chinese seemed to love it too.

I agree, should learn some basic foundation of the language. Because of my experience in China, I already have an idea of the most useful phrases/words/sentences I would want to learn.

hello .im uyen from vietnam. Galileo was right. many people speak english in district 1 and i live in dist 1 too so u dont really need to stay in dist 5. i dont know what your purpose to come to vietnam is but if u come for traveling, i suggest staying in dist 1 because there are more stuffs than any other districts. if u need help u can reach me by PM (MOD EDIT).
