Walking in the road when there is a perfectly good sidewalk. I've heard that some people do this at night for security, but they also do it in broad daylight! |

I do that alot... but that's because at least here in Toluca, the roads are usually in much better shape than the sidewalks (where they exist)... Ive twisted my ankle badly here twice and fallen I-dont-know-how-many times. It just sometimes seems safer to brave the traffic than the cement. |

Likewise. The sidewalks here are full of craters, cracks, and jutting bits of rebar - not to mention all the overgrown tree branches I need to duck under. It's much easier to walk in the open street.
My guess, Phil_K, is that a lot of those folks you mention may be from another part of the state where sidewalks aren't kept up too well. |

I'll walk on the road here in DF just to get around slow moving people...I find it a bit annoying that people will walk arm in arm, up to 5 people across, not letting people from behind pass very easily. |

This drives me up the wall (or onto the street!) too. There have been times when I've literally had to plaster myself against the wall to let people go by.
I also walk on the streets, except on the really busy main streets, of course. I find the traffic is used to going around pedestrians and the risk of injury is far lower than on the crowded sidewalks. Between the garbage bags, vendors, branches, crumbling pavement and doors opening suddenly, I'm better off on the street! |

Try navigating the sidewalks with a double stroller! |

The old thread is back; I've just thought of another one.
Strange anniversaries.
This year the TV Azteca program Ventaneado was making a big thing about its 11th anniversary, a local car dealership is celebrating 69 years and I've seen many more of these that I can't recall right now.

I'm not sure its safer in the road's. The dogs use the sidewalk, and they usually know what they are up to. Unfortunately they use the sidewalk as a toilet too, which is why I walk in the street... |
