Hello,
I have just received my bachelors degree and am planning to move to argentina (buenos aires) for a year. I was wondering what sort of visa arrangements I have to make beore I go. I don't really have a job lined up I was just going to head down there and wing it. Can I enter on a tourist visa and figure it out from there?

Also, I don't have an esl certificate. Will it be difficult for me to find work as a teacher? Although, I am open to doing all sorts of work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chaya

Ok..this has been talked about alot but here goes:

You can enter Argentina on a 90 day tourist visa. Prior to the 90 days passing you can take a day trip out of the country (Monte Video UR. is very close to BA and cool). Once you return you will have another 90 day visa. You can keep doing that for a year. Another course of action is just to let your visa expire and pay the small fine when you leave Argentina.

It is very hard to get a visa to stay in Argentina for over a year.

You should have no problem finding work in BA, but BA is expensive (compared to the rest of Argentina). Plan to have 2-4,000 USD banked prior to coming, and you should have a blast. I live in Rosario, which is a nice city but cheaper then BA, on 700 USD a month you can live well. Everthing in Buenos Aires costs a little more, especially housing!

Suerte!

Steve

thank you so much. your response was really helpful. I just have one more question....should I invest the time and money in getting a tefl certificate or is it possible to find work without one?
thanks again,
chaya

You don't need a tefl certificate to get hired here. Just look in the yellow pages or on Naturegirl's job list in the general Latin America forum. You can then pound the pavement and ask local language intitutes in Bs. As. if they are looking for teachers.. Just dress neatly..

Contracts are non existent here and it's very difficult to get a work visa. Everyone here works under the table 'illegally', and quite frankly nobody cares.. No one will slap you on the wrist for doing that.

It's better to have a tefl certificate if you later plan on moving to another country.. I have one just in case, but here it really isn't necessary here..

Suerte, Sabine
