Hi all,
My girlfriend has virtually been accepted to teach at 43 middle school in shijiazhuang, hebei. They have sent all the paper work and told her to get a tesol/tefl before semester starts so they can arrange the letter of invitation.
I was wondering if anybody can tell me if the school will accept an online tesol/tefl with less than 150hrs?
Surely they(either school or government) just want a piece of paper that says you have teacher training and wont check how many hours the course involved.
Obviously she would be looking to do a course that is accrediated, of which there seems to be many courses offering >150 hrs.

Er...they haven't sent the letter of invitation but yet they have sent all the documents? What exactly have they sent?
Most Chinese employers and recruiters have no idea about TEFL certificates and diplomas. Some ask for CELTA but I'd be damned if most knew what CELTA is. They probably only know about this mysterious thing called a TEFL certificate which is supposed to mean that you are trained and qualified. FWIW, unless the employer has specified the number of hours on the TEFL certificate, just get her to take a 40-hour online TEFL course. |

| TW speaks the truth. Chinese officials really have no idea what TEFL/TESOL cert is what, aside from a CELTA. If you want to be extra safe, though, I reccomend going with one of the better known brands of online certs like bridge-linguatec. They wont even care or know the difference. |

They've sent the contract and another couple of documents to her.
You two guys have more or less answered my question already, but do the employers look at the difference between an online tefl/tesol and actual classroom study?

When employers are unable to identify the difference between a degree issued by an accredited university and one in "Life Experience" printed by an outfit like The University of Phoenix, a four hour TESL certificate from Travel & Teach is as good as any.
It's China, the low-end of teaching English (in the majority of cases). Online, in-class, with a practicum: they're all the same scribbles on some piece of paper to help you get eighty more dollars a month.
If your friend wants to learn something substantial about teaching, however, the type of course to enroll in will be obvious. |

Like I have said, most employers wouldn't know the difference between a TEFL certificate and a TEFL diploma. ALso, I doubt they'd have the time to actually research and compare certificate A from certificate B. |

Employers have the time; it's the inclination that they're lacking. |
